Tony P. had his Italjet relined using friction material designed for crane winch drums,nice and soft.
He reported a good result.

One would tend to move down and one would tend to move up,as the load comes onto the ramp. Either case the load shifts toward the small end ,so no change there.
But the up and down movement may tend to load the seal with crud when it pulls down, or expose the shaft when moving up.

I think 'back in the day'
New-replacement cases were not stamped so you could DIY stamp and keep the engine numbers matching.

Either the gear has not been selected correctly or fully,
or the gear and /or main shaft itself is worn [if the bike has done lots of road miles in top gear this is my bet].
The gear is held engaged by the angle of the dogs[spurs] on the actual gear itself. Not so much by the detent ball and ...
