I was thinking this was some sort of electroplating, I did some research and found that there is black zinc, though I am not sure if cast steel is suited to zinc plating?

The bike doesn't show any signs of restoration work or modifications, I am leaning towards the coating being ...

Stick in the water, exhaust and throttle cable gone.

Rider at rear right; clothes changed from red/yellow to just red.

Logs/wood laying on hill at rear left gone

Sorry, not a Kawasaki piston as mentioned in the PM. It was the standard Honda piston modified to suit Kawasaki rings (see image below)

Totally forgot about Club Bultaco

Restored this Sherpa many years ago, before I started riding at Denman. Organised the number plate with year model.
