Before you get too excited, try buying slotted-head M7 screws, or socket-head M7 screws without having to look internationally.
Many of the oddish fasteners you might need for your Montesa will be available from one of the many twinshock-era parts specialists in Spain

Re: Cota 172 Restoration
I have to agree, finding anything 7mm is near impossible locally and I've been to many specialist nut and bolt places in Brisbane. Bunnings has 7 x 35mm HT zinc coated hex heads and nuts, that's about the best I've found, dare say that's what Masters is offering.
Re: Cota 172 Restoration
Thanks for the advice.
I'll start searching.
Any advice on how to remove the steering lock. I don't have the key

Re: Cota 172 Restoration
Do you want to unlock the steering lock or remove the whole thing off the steering head?

Re: Cota 172 Restoration
I am hoping to remove the lock, rekey it and refit so that I can leave the bike locked when I leave it somewhere.
The intention is to have the bike on Historic plates on the Log Book system.

Re: Cota 172 Restoration
I haven't worked on a 172, but looking at your photo and seeing an increased diameter section at the inner end of the mounting tube, I suggest that the lock mechanism is probably removed by
Removing the steering stem from the steering head tube
Removing whatever device they have used to hold the lock mechanism in position
Sliding the lock into the steering head tube

Re: Cota 172 Restoration
I just had a look at some 348 steering locks and they look the same externally as yours. My 348 frame with no steering stem in it is hard to get close to but if you are stuck I will have a look at the inside of the tube for you
I did see that the screw hole above the lock is where a short screw goes, that holds on a flat steel cover for the keyhole

Re: Cota 172 Restoration
Here is what a lock barrel looks like.
Do I need the key to rotate the inside of the barrel so that the silver pin in the image rotates out of the raised boss on the frame and the lock pulls out.
I broke the rivet off trying to remove the dust cover for the lock. The dust cover overlaps the square part of the lock barrel so I suppose that is what keeps it in when it is unlocked

Re: Cota 172 Restoration
Started stripping the bike down for the resto.
Took the rear wheel and shocks off and expected the swing arm to fall down, but it didn't
It is actually springy as if the pivot bushes are rubber like on a motor car.
On the Vallmoto site they look like brass/bronze bushes as I would have expected.
I checked and it doesn't seem to be the swingarm guard rubber causing the issue.
Any ideas ?

Re: Cota 172 Restoration
I removed the nut on each end of the swing arm pivot and the swing arm fell down
The problem is the shaft rotates with the swing arm as I guess it has corroded to the outer shaft
I've sprayed with WD40 and will let soak and see if it frees up.
Any other tricks people know of ?
