Green Cota - mystery solved

Re: Green Cota - mystery solved
Montesa 348 has the chrome stay running from the back of the head down to the frame by the swinging arm, the 349 didn’t have it. The tank and the seat unit were completely different, the 349 had a pre formed foam shallow unit. I think this was from the Honda take over, so they could get into the massive moped/ small bike market in Spain and Europe. I see this a lot down under, two completely different models!

The 349 cota [Greg Bostock] looks like a very original first series 349
Differences from the 348
Larger rear muffler
Engine cases are different with the area around the countershaft sprocket removed
Fuel tank is plastic not fibreglass and has a fuel gauge incorporated into the side of it
Longer swinging arm
Aluminum bashplate replacing the steel tubes under the engine
Loop over the rear guard is removed
Also the triple clamps are narrower than the 348 - returned to the std ones on the white 349

Brochure photo of first model of 349 range
Brochure photo of the Cota 348
The last model 348 had gold and black slotted tank stripes like the first 349 but I couldn't find a brochure photo of the last 348 model yet

You're referring to the Cota 349/4 from '82 or '83 there Les, there were three Cota 349 models previous to this including the White Wonder that all had the removable strut from engine to frame.

Yes they were pretty special back in the day, the 349/4, MH 349 and 350 from '82 and '83 are very much alike apart from mudguard colours and graphics. There was some minor changes amongst them, my late model 350 other than red guards has the triple clamps and fork brace from the 242 and the porting is different to my 349/4, the MH 349 was possibly somewhere in between.
