Here's a laugh. I just found the photos from when Colin Lough and I needed head photos to be stuck to our very first ACU (motorcycle competition) licences in 1975 and it reminded me of a funny story.
Colin and I were standing together in the queue to get our score cards at an LRMTC trial and while we were making our way towards the front of the queue, Colin obviously decided it would be a good idea to try and impress the two lovely young women who were handing out the score cards.
So when it was eventually Colin's turn and one of the women asked "OK what's your name?" he said "Spunky" with a broad grin. A fair bit of laughter immediately followed and eventually things went back to normal.
Old photos and memories

Re: South East Qld trials 1974-77
This is George McKenzie's first trials bike. My sister and I took photos of it and him riding it at a property on the south bank of the Brisbane River that is now the Leo Heischler (Gateway Motorway) Bridges.
Back then it was known as Baynses and I think next door was Borthwicks meatworks.
Anyway George bought this in 1977 from his school friend and LRMTC rider Phillip Smith from Capalaba.
For some reason I don't remember, I had my IT175D enduro bike there which must have been pretty new at the time.

Re: South East Qld trials 1974-77
By some strange confluence of time and space, I found a photo of my friend Mark Stephens riding his RL250 over the very same wet rock that there was an earlier photo of Rod riding over, and it might even be at the same trial. How amazing! It must have been an impressive section.

Re: South East Qld trials 1974-77
These photos are a bit of an unknown to me but I don't think it was at same trial as the previous photo of the Rod Tunkl/Mark Stephens wet rock, even though these negatives were in the same packet, because I can see Mark Stephens and his sister spectating, wearing joggers just above the white tape in the photo with the RL250 solo rider looking a bit out of shape.
The sidecar RL250 rider makes the name Dennis Johnson spring to mind but I may be wrong there.
Seeing the TY175JC rider doesn't ring any bells with me.
Not many helmets to be seen but there is the TY175JC so its probably 1976.

Re: South East Qld trials 1974-77
I'm thinking these were taken at Ron Boyle's Armstrong Creek property by the look of the countryside.
The person doing the air turn (or just about to crash) on the looks like Ross Nuttall who was an early member of NDMTC.
The second photo is Ross (or not Ross) on a big slip.
Third photo is Reg Broom on his TL125. Reg was also another early member of NDMTC.
I just noticed the huge scotch thistles there that look as tall as the Observer

Re: South East Qld trials 1974-77
Hey David.
I'm loving these photos. We'll done.
I'm reminded of a classic photo that sadly was never taken.
I'd asked my father to take a couple of shots of me doing a wheelstand whilst crossing our favourite creek. I thought that would be pretty cool.
We lined it all up ... the creek was a bit over ankle deep.
I lifted the wheel ... a bit pear shaped as normal ... straight into an adjacent hole in the middle of the creek.
Gone ... completely submerged ... with me coughing and spluttering about.
My dad absolutely pissing himself laughing.
We had to go home and get a rope to undertake the recovery operation.
Of course when it was all over we realised there was not one photo ... another opportunity lost!

Re: South East Qld trials 1974-77
This series was taken at an Open Trial run by NDMTC at the Baptist Camp property on Lacey's Creek Road, NW of Dayboro.
Based on the bikes I'm thinking it was 1976.
It's good to have the wide view photos to remind what a fabulous place it was.
Blonde hair TY175B jumping log is Alan Gilbert.
Dark hair TY175B (N82) jumping log is Dave Batterham.
Does anyone recognise anyone there?

Re: South East Qld trials 1974-77
This was at a track near Beenleigh and was the last event to be held there before it became a housing development. I think it was called "Broadwater Estate"
It had rained a bit and many riders couldn't even get around the track. Not much speed happening that day.
I guess it must have been whatever year that radial-fin head MAICOs appeared which I thought was 1976, but where are the RM s if it was 1976? So it may have been earlier.
Great to see people still riding TM125 s and round barrel Pursangs amongst the Elsinores.
In all those bikes I could only see one .

Re: South East Qld trials 1974-77
If you thought the mud MX was weird, how about this day when the NDMTC ran a picnic fun event. Shown here are the "slow" race and the wheelie competition. I think my Mum or Sister took these photos.
It was held on the open section of river flat at Ron Boyle's property at Upper Lacey's Creek.
We also played "red rover" using rolled up newpapers to tag people (and there was only one crash when Kent Hughes accidentally rode over the edge of the creek bank)
There's a photo of the start line for the slow race. The starter is Frank (Shorty) Hall and riders left to right are:
Stan Gilbert TY175C, John Heidemann RL250, someone SL70, Euan (Teeny) Lahey AG100, Terry Wilson TL125, Alan Gilbert TY175B, David Lahey Alpina 325, Reg Broom minibike, Kent Hughes TS185, Colin Lough TY250A (out of shot)
I noticed my Dad was sensible enough to wear PPE (a hat)

Re: South East Qld trials 1974-77
I'm thinking this photo is from a memorable LRMTC trial at "Darlington Park".
I entered, arrived on time, but didn't get to do much riding because to get to the sections required crossing a fast-flowing fairly-deep creek over water-worn stones (shown in photo) and I managed to fall off in the creek and get my leg trapped against the exhaust header and the bike sucked in water. I then spent the rest of the day getting the Alpina going again.
Did get to watch someone do an almost-endo on a TY175 when their rear wheel hit something big and solid in the grass beside the road while riding seated. They didn't finish the trial either mainly due to the damage to the bike.
That trial taught me a lot about how to do things in a way that increases your chance of finishing a trial.
A couple of years after that I went through a similar learning experience when I started riding Enduros and Pony Express.
