One thing about the sport is you don't need a lot of room. This is about practicing in small spaces:

I had an experienced rider, Rob, showing me the ropes at a TCV practice day recently (my first) and he said, "It all changes once the tapes go down."

This is a link to making your own practice sections:

It isn't a video.

In this video the section has been constructed from a range of materials:

I suspect it isn't beginner level but does show what is possible and while my mentor, Rob, did say everything changes once the tapes go down - he also said, nothing replaces time on the bike, and that is what this guy is getting.

I just spent 50 minutes riding around a very small part of my backyard. I go around stuff, left and right, and over stuff, logs and tyres, and in-between close set trees. BTW I live in a rented farmhouse and a small part of it is available for practice. I just got so comfortable with the whole 'go slow' thing yesterday. It felt natural and good, and so, given that, can anyone explain to me the day before when I would have had trouble balancing in an armchair.

And no, it wasn't too many reds! Sometimes, you have to be in the "ZONE". Thoughts?

A European Championship featuring very young, very talented riders. There's a interesting lyric in the video: They sing, 'Mind over matter'. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the rub for us older newbies whose minds are very aware of the potential peril!

At about nine and a half minutes the weather gets pretty ugly.

The Western Districts Trials Club Website has just had a big update so some links to the old site may no longer work.
Barry's original text and videos are all still there and are an absolute gold mine of information for trials riders of all levels.

The new site is the same address but links to individual pages may no longer work.
Have a look at http://wdtc.org.au and click on the training tutorials menu or go to it directly at this link http://wdtc.org.au/training-tutorials/

Cheers

Thanks for the updated links, Holster.

I attended my first training and practice day today where I was wonderfully coached by Rob of TCV.

You should know I did prang, and broke the bit that connects the brake lever to the handlebar. Interestingly enough we were just going from one place to another place and my brain wasn't completely engaged. So, my advice, for what its worth, is don't switch off newbies. Also, make sure the levers aren't too tight.

Thank to Paul giving me an appropriate part, gratis, which meant my own day wasn't cut short.

I was very disappointed in my own tool kit which I sourced from the MX store. Strongly suggest newbies check that their tools match the bike they are riding today. In my defence, my other bike is a trail bike and the biggest concern is a flat tyre.

Regards,
The Doctor,

PS and BTW: So impressed with some of the young kiddies getting around today. There was this child, might have been 4yo, and man, could that child ride. Followed Mum all over.

Another young person, twice as old as the one before, was talking to Dad while casually stopped, feet on pegs, for 3, 4 was it 5 minutes. Now if only I can get my 57 year old mind and body in sync and do that.

A great day - a practice day. I spent most of my day in just two dimensions although the slope added a nice wrinkle.

Once again, thanks, Rob for your patience and advice. I learnt a lot. I never went over a rock that big, or cleared a log that high off the ground, or turned so tightly. All down to you.

Here is a video by American, Ryan Young. Ryan has a number of videos on Youtube and is well worth a look.

This video gets very specific and relates to scoring. Enjoy and learn.

Here is the second in the series:

So I'll leave it to the forum administrators as to whether this video should be included in a Trials Australia forum. Your call.

It's Graham Jarvis and he is doing very slow work on an enduro bike, and explaining how to get across small and large logs in a very clear and concise way. Personally, I found it informative as it relates to something, Rob, my mentor, at a recent TCV trials practice day, was getting me to experiment with on a lowish rock ledge. Have to say that I did not quite get it and my bash plate did sterling work. I winced a lot

Barry Morris has made a video about this topic too. It's probably more than beginner level but is an obvious next step for us starting out:

A 2013 video from New Zealand with very few views. But it's an authentic representation of early challenges in mototrials:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyOTgA-_gnI

There are lots of junior riders shown.

Off to Glenmaggie this weekend and I'm looking forward to it. It will be my first trial. In this video the rider, Hannah, talks about her first trial - which was held indoors:
