The person on the Sherpa T is John Hunwick, the wildly energetic first President of the Northern Districts Motorcycle Trials Club. After doing the trials thing for a few years, John got into running horse endurance events. He was out setting a horse endurance course in the mountains west of Brisbane in about 1979 (on a trail bike) (on his own) and the clutch burned out on a steep bit and he became exhausted trying to get out with the bike and had to stay there the night lying beside a log. We saw the story on the news that he was missing and went out the next day to help with the search with our trials bikes as we were very familiar with the area. The police had a road block at the Lacey's Creek turnoff to stop anyone going out making tracks that might make it hard to find John. An aboriginal police tracker found him that morning and he recovered well from the ordeal.

"Ain't No More Cane" is a traditional prison work song of the American south.

It has been recorded by Leadbelly, Son Volt, and by The Band on the album The Basement Tapes. In 2006, the Austin, Texas-based Band of Heathens included the song on their Live at Momo's album. In 2007 Lyle Lovett released two versions of the tune on his album It's Not Big, It's Large. On February 16, 2008, Lovett and John Hiatt performed the song live at the Ulster Performing Arts Center in Kingston, New York, along with The Band's Garth Hudson.

The refrain of the song reads:
Ain't no more cane on the Brazos
It's all been ground down to molasses.

It is featured also in the film Festival Express, in which Rick Danko, Janis Joplin, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and various other musicians drunkenly sing it on the train going to the next concert on the tour.

The Brazos River extends through Central Texas to the Gulf of Mexico near Freeport, Texas.

I am an original Northern District motorcycle trials club member i was 13, just wondering have there ever been a reunion of sorts over the years? IT was 1975/76 i think and the 1st meeting was held over the road from my place at Brian Miles place,then they were held at the church behind pizza hut at Chermside. Hello Noel. Sometimes I get to see other early NDMTC members at Qld and Aussie titles events.
Over the past last fifteen years I have met up with Mark and John Stephens, Clarrie and Marj Cunliffe, Leanne Cunliffe, Shorty Hall, Ross Nuttall, David Goldsmith, Paul Walker, Reg Broom, Warren Broom, Karen Broom, Karen Scheider (McQuilty), Nan McQuilty, Robert and Jenny Marsden, Ed and Lea-Ellen Platt, Craig Peebles, Colin Lough and George McKenzie. I do remember your name Noel but am having trouble picturing you. I was 17 in 1976 and looked like this back then. Which Montesa did you have?

All those names you mentioned unreal haven't heard them for years.At first i had a TL125 and then the Montesa Cota 247 and my father had a Celica then we bought a red ht ute and my long suffering mother and sister(Karen) use to take me and out riding every weekend. The Dallas brothers with there TY's,Dave Gilbert and another bloke used to have VW Combies. THanks for the reply running late for work again will be in touch soon.PS I ran third in AUST champion titles in 1977 went to Melbourne with Bryce McQuilty,Shane Grant and a bloke from Ipswich in his Range Rover. Yes the Combi Van boys were Dave Batterham (Bultaco) and Alan Gilbert (Bultaco/TY175/Bultaco). I think I now remember you and your TL125 and am still working on trying to remember your Cota 247. You reminded me I did meet up again with one of the Dallas brothers at Lacey's creek in about 1999 - Shane Dallas I think it was. His twin was Wayne Dallas.
Alan Gilbert's Dad Stan Gilbert (Bridgestone/TY175) also rode along with Reg Broom (TL125) in "post-35" class. Remember John Heidemann RL250/TY175? He married one of Stan's daughters (Jan).
Remember David Bennett (RL250) and his sister Debbie Bennett? Debbie married Dave Batterham.
Your trip to Melbourne for the Aussie Titles with Bryce McQuilty and Shane Grant in the Range Rover was probably with Scott Van Iperin and Scott's Dad.
More people from back then I have not seen for ages are Alan White (TY175), Kerry Green (AKA Jack Yamaha (TL125)), Wayne Knowles (OSSA MAR), Greg Draper (Cota 247) and Jeff Devine (KT250). There was also an older bloke Brian? with a KT250 from the army along with John Hunwick and Shorty Hall. There was also the guy with the amazing long hair and long beard on an OSSA but I'm having trouble remembering his name.
I'll keep the CD stacker in my head searching for more
