Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing my 25+ year old TS 250 suzuki with a genuine 2100 k's on the clock (yes! genuine ) to sometimes not want to start with the kick starter? It normally is a one kick wonder. Give it a bump start and it almost starts before the clutch is out. Mostly, when it has not been ridden for an hour or so I know this is not a trials question, but it keeps me riding when I can't ride the Techno.
Hard to tell from what you have said so far. Relevant info would be: Maintenance/repair history? Bike usage history? Colour of spark? Appearance of sparkplug tip? Running any different once started? Any changes made before it started playing up? What happens if you select the starting device (lever on carby) when it is running normally? What model TS250 ie early air cooled TS250J,K,L? later air cooled model? water cooled TS250X?
***bought new in 79 ***TS250-4 air cooled two stroke ***only road/tar km's ***I have had it 6 months ***when I got it Ireplaced the air filter, it was just starting to crumble, motor running ok so I have not cleaned out the carby yet ***It was leaking oil out of G/B breather when motor running, I drained out 1.7l of oil, there should have been 800cc only. The oil looked a little dark but did not smell of petrol? It stopped the leak ***drained the fuel tank and flushed *** I have not done a plug chop ***blows a little extra smoke for a while after a bump starting ***motor otherwise runs fine
Sounds like junk blocking the starting circuit or the starting device not working for some reason.
Try putting the starting device on with the motor running and see of it makes it run different. Having the starting device on should make the bike blubber (4 and 8 stroke) at low to medium throttle openings. If it makes no difference to the way the motor runs, the problem is in the starting device.
You still haven't said how long ago it stopped being a one kick wonder.
I'll try and read behind the lines a bit here. You said you flushed out the fuel tank so I'm assuming the bike sat without use for a while??? If so then jellified fuel or junk in carby is the most likely cause.
Suggest you clean out the inlet tract between the air filter and the carby and clean out the carby including starting circuit, float bowl, pilot jet and idle air passages, needle jet and needle jet cavity.
Finally pulled the carby down, all I could find was one very small drop of water in the bottom of the bowl half the size if a match head, and I could not see through the pilot jet, although I could not detect what the blockage was! All seems well now.
Mate....if you found water...you've found something pretty major in a carb. It's amazing the bike started at all
Best of balance.
