Keeping Cool

Post by Neo »

This might be a question the Cairns and Darwin riders. But how do you guys keep cool when you ride? I may have the oppertunity to ride in that kind of climate soon and I was wondering how I would survive the heat

I've considered something like this :-

Anyone ridden with something remotely like this?

I can't remember where I heard it but apparently there is no such thing as heat stroke.
basicly the argument was if you kept up water intake all would be good. (heat stroke is not the same as sun stroke). I have run in very hot climates carrying a 30 kg backpack, and whilst it was uncomfortable, so long as I kept out of the sun where possible kept up fluid intake and rested properly I was I able to cover 20- 30kms per day off road, on foot,
I was in my early 20's then though.
I would say for shortish periods you would be best sitting in the shade, drinking plenty and make sure you eat plenty of the right stuff also.

Neo,
I wouldn't worry about stuff like that. Just ride anyway, sweat like a pig like I do, and then when you've finished for the day the first couple of dozen beers go down real good. Of course, if this becomes a habit you might end up being the size and shape that I am, which is not a good thing for any poor trials bike to be carrying.

I know it's hard to think of the heat when it's cool, but I like to be prepared 8)

Anyway, as it's turned out, the hot trip I tried to plan (to NT over Xmas) has gone very cool indeed... wifes not so keen now. :(

Anyway after all this hot thought I might cool off by heading to Tassie for Xmas instead
Can anyone down there show me the rocks?

Now now - enough of the Tassie Jokes.... It gets quite hot here in good 'ol Tassie, anything up to 9 degrees this time of year (not counting the wind chill factor). Unfortunately it is law in Tasmania not to divulge temperatures over xmas, january and february as people may get the idea to come and visit us.
Really though if you are coming down we have rocks, big hills, Creeks and Streams , a large hole in the Ozone layer and sun that would burn your eyes out. You are welcome to pop down any time!

Cheers,

Stork
