Trials Tales No 12

Post by tat ty »

Hey Greg

Enjoyed that!

Picture this.

1972........... 11 years old, my dad has the first Ag100; chasing the cows.

1974........... I get the TY250A.

2007........... The Ag100 has become a Kawasaki 250 something.

2008........... Time to chase the cows....... First to the TY wins!!!!

Dad is now in his 80's!!!!!!!!!!!

WHY DON'T I FIND THIS SURPRISING!

Alastair.

What is it with farmers anyway? I guess they are practical people who know a good thing when they see it. When I bought my TY250A in 1995, it's life work from 1973 till then had been solely to ride from the house to the mailbox to collect the mail on a sugar cane farm near Bundaberg. I still have trouble believing it but the condition of the bike was a pretty good witness to the story.

Just because someone is a farmer does not mean they don't have trials aspirations. Even if it is a flat sugar cane farm. Just my opinion.

Hi Gordon,

Totally agree with your thoughts. I can say this without fear as I am a farmer and have trials aspirations. Pity my actions don't always live up to my aspirations.
But I also agree with David, in that there where a lot of TYs sold to farmers with nary a thought given to their real purpose.

Cheers mate,

ah yeah but. just because they don't have aspirations now, doesn't mean they are not learning skills for later. Thats what happened to me. I used to chase the milking cows (slow) and see how slow I could go and if I could do a wheelie/ mono at the same speed as the cows walked. I had never realy heard of trials then, except the kick start competition on the tv. ( I lived in England for a while ) ( If you havent seen the Kick start comps have a look on you tube, good healthy fun and not to technical ). So I recon the cattle chaser trials bike riders will lead to more people being involved in the sport in the long run.

Cheers Gordon

You are bringing back some memories now Gordon. The kickstart trials was shown on a tv sports show we used to have over here called the wide world of sport. My favorite part was the ladders across the creek that had an odd number of rungs removed. When the riders got it wrong the front wheel would drop down in the gap and the rider would end up in the drink. We held a one off kickstart event in :QLD: in the 80's. It was held as a joint venture between the local clubs and was a very enjoyable day for everyone involved.

I think the bit on kickstart I enjoyed best was when they paired up a pro rider with a ten year old. I t just goes to show the randomness of trials because I remember many times the youngster getting better times than his partner.

Ah the good old days, I was a ten year old myself, not a care in the world.

Realy though I'm still a ten year old, its just that I was born longer ago.

Cheers gordon
