TY175 Spark-No Spark??Gear shifter

Post by I Russ »

Just picked up a local TY175C that seems to be loosing its spark, looking through the flywheel when running ,the points look abit inconsistent (spark jumping around,to my limited knowledge)when its going.
Bike goes along happy then just die's? Check the plug and no spark, then after a few kicks the sparks back, put the plug back in and off it goes
Bikes been stored alot, filter had disintegrated ,dismataled and blow out carb twice.
Give us a clue
also are the flywheel pullers available locally??
And are ignition parts still available from local Yamaha??

Also I understand the shifters are prone to wear,a bit of a bugger to get your gear, will bushing the outer casting fix this or is there more??

Give us a clue can't tell what you want to know here. If the bike was ridden with the air filter foam pieces on the loose, there may be some stuck under the reeds, but that would be a bit unusual. Once it gets past the carby the foam doesn't normally cause problems
also are the flywheel pullers available locally?? yes from any motorbike shop its a very common size puller
And are ignition parts still available from local Yamaha?? probably, don't know which Yamaha shop you go to, mine does
Also I understand the shifters are prone to wear,a bit of a bugger to get your gear, will bushing the outer casting fix this or is there more?? bushing outer case will reduce slop, but there is probably slop in the link part of the linkage and in the inner end of the shifter shaft. There is a kit available ex UK that includes the commonly wearing parts or you can buy them individually from Australian Yamaha shops

if you can see the points arcing and sparking when looking through the flywheel, it usually means the condensor is stuffed. If your gunna replace the condensor you might as well put in some new points too. Buy a flywheel puller for about $30 (27mm left hand thread from memory) and new points and condensor, the whole exercise should come in under $100

New air cleaner - Yamaha Australia stocked part No: 525-14451-01

Yes all the above to condenser.

Is this the bike the one recently on the board for $750 ?

Gear shift goes to shifter linkage LHS behind small cover, pull this off and see if corrosion has seized it up, pull apart, clean it up and regrease and try it again.
If this still doesnt work, it may be the shifter selector adjustment behind the clutch. (have to pull of the RHS casing now). Bit more than a fiddle now.
I would rather push my twinshock than ride a modern!

most commen problem ive seen with my 175,s is shearing the key in the keyway of the flywheel , throws the timing all over the shop! stops sudenly. breaks more often if you push start! i throw a set of points and condenser in every once in awhile anyway! gota have a flywheel puller if your going to ride old bikes !

Turned up a M27 X 1.0 left hand puller and got the flywheel off to find the condeser hanging on a loose screw, also I rewired from coil to coil, the old wire had gone hard and the copper had gone black, fitted the correct plug and now the bike starts perfect.
Will pick up a new condenser and point in the near future (Yamaha wanted $60 just for a condeser)

As for the gear selector has anyone tried the UK tytrials mod I see them selling,I have play on my shaft/bore of around 0.3mm? Otherwise look OK

The bits that John Cane (TYTRIALSUK) sells as a kit is just Yamaha parts put together in a bag and yes that is what I have used recently in my TY175. Earlier in the life of the bike, I rebushed the inner case and cover holes, and built up the shaft a couple of times.
