Hi guys,
Could anyone help regarding sprocket sizes on Montesa 348?
I need to replace the chain and both sprockets. The current set up is 10-33.
I would like to set the ratio up for trials.
Thanks
Johno

Re: Montesa 348 sprockets
10 33 is trials gearing on a 348. Montesa designed the internal geaing to make the rear sprocket as small as possible for improved clearance in rocks. Thats why the rear is smaller than many other twinshock trials bikes. They also have a very wide ratio gearbox. With 10 33 gearing, they are easily capable of 120km/h.
Some people gear them lower but it really is personal preference. There is so much grunt available with that motor you wouldn't gear one down to improve pickup, but if you ride in very tight grippy conditions and don't use the clutch, lower gearing might make it more managable.

Thanks David,
I was about to order the sprockets through trialsbits.co.uk and they only list rear sprockets 40 to 44 teeth?
Do you think the 40 would be to low or should i find something closer to the original ratio.
It's been a few years since I rode a trials bike (1975 Beamish Suzuki) so maybe slower might be better.
Appreciate your input

I would stick to the 10/33 gearing if possible. You might have to look further afield to get the right ones.

Johno,
Try Southwest Montesa. Jarrod is very easy to deal with and he has a lot of stuff.
I have two 348 Montesa's running, the one still has the extra weight and the other has had the weight removed, we have had a variety of riders on both bikes in varying trials situations, and have found the standard gearing perfect for all concerned.
