A postcard from the Otways

Post by BJ »

This is what I have been doing lately.

After this ride I invested in body armour! After all you can only go so fast on a trials bike before you end up flying and a sapling locking the front brake at 50k's tends to launch you pretty good

It brings a smile to my face when I pass them big orange things and riders that are young enough to still have hair! I've had a couple of rides lately and these enduro bikes aren't so quick on the tight stuff and the Scorpa eats them on hill climbs. Not easy riding two hours flat out standing all the time only stopping to top up the tank from my numerous hidden fuel stashes. I am getting about 35 km range out of the standard trials tank which is pretty good. I usually end up in the lead but everyone complains they can't tell when I turn onto a different track because I don't leave much of tyre track behind and they can't hear my bike because it is so quiet.

Anyone wanting to do some trail riding with a rego'd bike is welcome to give me a yell.

Well I've been at it again!

Last weekend was a 120km ride with a mix of gravel bush roads, deep sand and dusty fire trails with some single track technical stuff towards the end. Going off the GPS the little Scorpa can comfortably cruise at around 80kmh but you do feel the weight of carrying your extra fuel in a backpack. The week end ride had almost thirty riders with the smallest bike being a 200 Yam enduro and plenty of big bore KTMs etc. Even though I well and truly out powered the nimble trials iron keep me in the lead pack all day. I donned the leaders vest for the last 30km which about 15km of mostly gravel roads on the way to some pretty challanging Single Track. This stint was going well until one guy caught his right foot on some soft ground and broke his leg (Both Tib and Fib as we later found out). I have to give him credit for toughness because he rode the next 4km back to my place while nearly blacking out with the pain. Finally we got him in the Ambo where he was drugged up and sent off to get put back together.

Not an easy guy to move about on one leg, 6'4" and 155kg but he was happy once they got the pain killers into him.

Spot the odd bike in these shots???

Two weeks before was another little ride in the rain with three big KTM's. I can't believe how many times these blokes dab!!

Who says you can't have fun on a trials bike. If anyone wants to get rec reg on their bike or has a trail bike and wants to do some riding down here let me know!

Oh, and you might like this one, the guy who organised the ride lifted his KTM 530 onto his shoulder to raise money for the Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne.

Here is the vid, I was walking around with the Scorpa in my arms. I know what I'd rather pick up! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e47hHrpQWec
