Hi Peter, no havent rode for about 5 years now, still know what to do but halfway through the section am flatout hanging on. Being fit might help ! Was riding B grade on my Bultaco and loving it, could even sneak a podium every now and then! It was a win win situation if i got flogged i could say " mate look what i'm riding" and if i did well i'd say the same thing! Rode clutchless and never found a turn too tight for a twinshock ( you can always put your foot down you know) if the section was too hard i'm not above taking a 5, chances were they are gunna 5 it or 3 it anyway so you dont get too far behind. Most of the young guys on twinshocks dont realise we never used to run an idle and i had the lockstoppers on my Bultaco set so i could just throw it against the stoppers on a trailing throttle ( no idle ) and it would just go straight around. Try it with an idle and you just push the front. Had to halve the fywheel on my Bulty to enable it to slow down quicker after climbing a ledge that had a sharp turn after it ( no clutch remember ) the standard flywheel would have just pushed me out of the section. Had Italjet wheels ( Bulty brake hub linings are just sprayed on but Italjet hub linings are steel ) electronic ignition, Mikuni carb same as my 70s bike, Bing had more power but i used to wear a slide out in 3 to 4 weeks and then the bike would suck air and idle again.

Hi Ross

Came across a photo of you from 1982 on an Italjet test day. For those of you who never saw Ross ride in his prime, this is typical of his style. He could make a bike dance.

Hey Peter, Everyone thats ever seen that picture thinks its me, ! Same bike, same style, same shirt even, but its Barry Dack , A grade rider and father of motocross legend Craig Dack. I did ride an Italjet 350 and was sponsored by Avon tyres , great bikes but the tyres were a bit sus, mine were all right ( special 2 plys flown out from england ) but the ones available in Australia were 3 ply and not so good. They were however the tyre of choice for Australian short circuit riders. While on the subject of tyres, for awhile i rode a Gas Gas 350 my one and only non twin shock bike and when i got it i thought wow they sure have come a long way especially when i would hop back on my old Bulty ! Then one day i lashed out and put some modern tyres (radial ) on my bulty and couldnt believe the difference ! All of a sudden the diference in bikes wasnt so great so i sold the Gas Gas and went back to the bulty !. Before everyone starts carrying on, bear in mind that i rode the gasser old style anyway , to old to change, so the hydraulic clutch was no good to me, touch the throttle and it would leap out from under me i was always " behind it " touch the brakes and i was over the top, and all of a sudden being smooth on the bulty had a lot of appeal !! Add to that the ability to say "cause you flogged me look at the old dunger i'm riding " and years of pressure riding just melt away. Peter you will know exactly what i'm talking about !! Just to have a ride for fun is a great feeling !!

Hi Ross

Yes, now that I take a closer look, it is Barry. It is the greatest impersonation of a trials rider ever perpetrated. You were obviously Barry's hero, and I can understand him trying to copy you. There were times I wished I had copied you too!

All these years I thought it was a great photo of you. I will have to look into my archives and try again for one of you.

Anyway everyone, this IS Ross's style, and if I can't find one of you, we'll call this your twin brother on a good day!!!!
