KT 250 rego ?

Post by KT Mark »

Was the KT 250 Kawasaki able to be street registered in Australia like the TY 250's were? I see that the L/H switch block has a blanked indicator switch slot. Has anyone out there ever rego'd a KT ?

Many KTs sold in Australia were road registered from new and many were used as trail bikes and as commuters.
Yes they came without indicators, as did many other dirt bikes of that time.

Motor vehicals did not always have compliance plates. I am not sure what year they became compulsory. I think it was 78. I need to check at my local rego office. As the plate is all about ADR ( Aust Design Rules ) the year of compulory fittment is the same for the whole of OZ. I think the KT is registerable. I just rego'd a Z900 1974 mod and it has no plate, never had one. My 55 VW never had one. My bros WLA Harley never had one. The thing is in QLD they would issue you an ID number and a blue mod plate to fit/rivet to the frame. I am away working at the moment but will be looking further into this issue when I get back to WA. There is also a cut off date for compulory fitment of Indicators to a motorcycle. I will let you know how I go as soon as I get back to Perth.

No probs with regoing KTs in Queensland. Call in to your local Queensland Transport office and there are checklists there for what is needed for different capacity (pre ADR) bikes. You might even be able to download the checklist from their website.
From memory you won't need blinkers for a KT but might need to have two headlight beams ie high and low beam and dipper switch and tail and brake lights. Not sure if you need the brake light to work off the front brake lever or if working off the rear brake is enough. Probably don't need a battery either.
I think you may need to make a declaration about the age of the bike (so they can treat it as a pre-ADR vehicle).
Post-ADR bikes are another kettle of fish entirely. Unless they have an ADR plate already, for them you need to get an approved person (motorbike shop) to fit an ADR plate. I know someone who did that with a grey import tin-tank TY250 monoshock (1986) and it cost more than the bike was worth to register it mainly because of the cost of getting the ADR work done.

Ooh that got my juices flowing. Looks very nice. I just wished I could come to the up coming events on your side of the Island. I think it is about 4500kms away as the crow flies. I will post a picture of my machine when I get home. I am itching to get out on it.

Mark I don't know if you have been following the Brooweena story, but part of that story is that we are going for an unofficial world record number of KTs in the one spot at the same time. So far I think we are up to seven or eight. Who knows, there may even be more! We haven't counted on anyone from WA making a surprise appearance with a KT.
