TY Identification

Post by hisee »

Good evening,

I have a couple of TYs which I need help to discern the model types.

They both appear to be 1976 models based on the Identification numbers however one of them doesn't have a compliance plate. Some of it's features are a silver frame, flat style seat and wider front wheel approx 60 mm. Also it has a different exhaust to the other still still had Yamaha stamped on it but had a notice regarding US Forestry approved. frame/eng no: 525-000320

The other one based on the frame/engine number could either be a TY175 JE or a TY 175 JC. Can anyone tell how to tell which type significance/insignificance of this model type and any links to spare parts or literature/information on these models.
frame/eng no: IN4-000320

Also what are the discerning features between a TY175 A/B/C?

Thankyou in advance
Shane

Shane the engine and frame numbers are a good guide. The first engine number you listed is 1975 TY175B and they did not come with compliance plates (being sold before the introduction of the ADR compliance system). If it was 1976 it would have a number that went 525-10....., not 525-00...... The 1976 model TY175C didn't have ADR plates either.
Having a wide front wheel rim may just mean that the front wheel from a TY250 twinshock or a TY175JC has been fitted. There are five different front rims fitted to TY twinshocks and if you want you can narrow down which model it came from if it is important to you. You will need to read the stampings on it.

TY175A - no such thing
TY175B - carby painted black, yellow and white graphics
TY175C - carby not painted, burnt orange and white graphics, otherwise same as TY175B
Genuine and aftermarket parts are available from aussie Yamaha shops and specialist TY parts suppliers in France (France Trial Classic), the UK (John Cane - Trails and Trials UK) and the US (B&J Racing). The overseas suppliers have a web presence so just do a google search to find them.
Parts books and individual parts are frequently listed on eBay. For example I bought a (new) carby float for one of my TY175s last week on eBay.

Whilst we are talking about TY identification and carbys I have another question:

Do I have the correct carby on my TY175?

I am pretty sure I have a JC model (IN4000126), with the big exhaust and compliance plate. Earlier this week I did a rebuild on the carby to record the jetting settings. When comparing to the picture in the TY175B manual I noticed that my carb appeared different around the bowl and main jet. I do remember David Lahey saying that the jetting was different on the JC compared to the competion models. But I am wondering if someone has done the dodge on this carby or is it just another ADR thing.

See pict attached.

Thanks again, Mark.

It looks like a JC carby to me. JC carbys have a big hex plug in the bottom of the float bowl to get to the main jet or to let gunk out, while the TY175B and C have a main jet holder that unscrews from the side of the float bowl.

David,

Prompt response - cheers. I don't suppose you know what the standard jetting/settings for the jc carby are then?

Here's what I got:

Pilot air screw: 1.25 turns out
Main jet: 140/253 0-8 (looks like a 140 screwed into a 253)
Pilot jet: 22.5
Clip pos'n: Didn't check.

Thanks, Mark.

Thanks David,

After scouring the old posts I'd hope you would come to the rescue.

So I now know I have a 75 175B. Would silver be the original colour of this frame?

As for the other.

TY175 JE or a TY 175 JC any way to tell them apart?

Thanks for your help.

Shane

Yes Shane. All TY175s came with silver frames.
Sorry but I'm not much help with TY175JE info. I don't even know if I've ever seen one. I thought that the 1N4 prefix was TY175JC and there certainly were lots of them sold in Australia.
Theres an article on TY175s in an early VMX magazine that mentions the TY175JE. I'll have a look later tonight.
Regards
David

Sorry it took me till today to find the TY175 article in VMX. It was based on info from aussie Stephen Fox and is in VMX No 18 from 2003
It says that the
TY175JE has and engine/frame number range of 1N4-100101 to 1N4-200000 and was a 1978 model
TY175JC is 1N4-000101 to 1N4-100000 and was a 1976 model

Hi,
my son has just bought his first TY175 (first bike for that matter)
It is Portugese Orange and has been parked up for more than 25 years, but runs crisp. Front and rear gaurds are dust, but this is to learn on, not a resto (yet) so he will have to find some S/H gaurds.

It has a Compliance plate, 1/77 and Frame number 1N4-001081, the Engine number is the same.
Any help on identifying the model would be appreciated.
