new would be a understatement

Post by borgy1 »

hi guys,
when i say new i mean never seen a trials bike in the flesh.
i've been riding dirtbikes since i was 7 and i'm 27 now.
i've been thinking about getting a trials bike to do some cross training and because i love anything that burns fuel, maybe except for my lawnmower.
i'de like to join a club if i think i could ride one good enough but not sure how advanced i need to be.
problem is i dont know where to start. i'm going to the tooborac trails on may2nd to have a look and i don't know if there is trade displays in your sport like in enduro bikes but will suss it out anyway.
i ride a 450 yamaha at the moment but because trials bikes are so foreign to me i don't know what bike would suite me best for delepment etc.
i don't want to trade up every year so i was hopeing to get a bike that would grow with my skills.
i'm a member on dirt bike site and generally hate these questions being asked by newbies but i'm really stuck.
i live in northern suburbs of melb and might try to get in contact with the bendigo club and see if they can help as well.
i don't know if i should buy new/second hand for first bike and every one has an opinion on what make to buy but some advice on what not to buy and what to look out for would be good.
oh yeah also is there any "come try days" or somewhere to hire trials bikes?

Howdy borgy1,

Well it seems you are about where I was three odd years ago. Keep at it it's well worth it believe me. The answer to a majority of your questions can be found right here on this site, there is quite a few here http://www.trials.com.au/content/index. ... &Itemid=35
and plenty more elsewhere , browse around and you will discover plenty of info available.

This forum (ADV based) has also created a dedicated trials forum and there is a great read on getting started here
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=561935

I'm sure you will also find the Bendigo club very helpful as I have found everybody involved in this fantastic sport to be.
Keep reading, asking, and looking it will all become clear soon enough, and within 12 months bikes with seats will look a little strange to you !!

Enjoy BT :D

I would recommend a bike between 2 - 4 years old. This way it is easy to sell and recover your costs and should also be in good condition. If you get into riding then the cheapest way to go is to update every year but with a bike that is a year old, or if you can afford it then a new one every year, even this way will be much cheaper than updating a your mx or enduro each year. Look up the dealers as the Beta dealer is located in Melbourne and he will will be able to help you.
Good luck and hope you keep at it as it is a great blast.

You are on the right track - drop into the Tooborac event at Emu Flat on Sunday & chat to a few people - see you there!

Depending on how far north you are based, the Oakleigh clubgrounds may be convenient for you also.

Most Sundays 10am - 3pm sees a freindly crew out practicing, drinking coffee & resolving the problems of the world!

Very approachable bunch of mis-fits & you'll definitely find somebody who''ll be keen to let you have a go & show you the ropes.
