HELP 2002 290 Sherco bad spark problem

Post by footpeg »

 HELP my 2002 290 Sherco is having a spark problem. It will only give spark some times i.e. it will start and run with lots of revs for a short time only them die. PS fuel is clean and flowing.
Actions taken so far: New plug no change. Removed cleaned coil and wiring with CRC no change. Removed timing cover but not fly wheel, fly wheel looking very rusty on out side, used compresor to blow clean inside timing area small amount of condensation came out. I then used contact cleaner and sprayed it in side and again used compressed air to dry it out. still no change.

Hi footpeg & Stu, this sounds like a stator problem if you have ruled out all the usual obvious suspects like dud plug, bad earth, kil switch shorting out etc. I'll try to get you some specs on the stator windings to check if you have a mulitmeter (this can still be inconclusive as the stator changes as the windings heat up) normally the easiest way is to send the stator to "small coil rewinds" in geelong for testing & rewind if necessary. They are quick & reasonably priced & also offer an express turnaround if theres an important ride on.

thanks Don. I'll get the flywheel off first and check for corrosion before I order anything.

Hi Don,
as you may have seen i sent for a Quote on new replacement parts just to get an idea of what cost i could be looking at if the worst was to be.
however I just kept on with the job of ilimination and have had great success today :P this will make most readers laugh but hey after cleaning and drying and cleaning and drying and repluging all conections with out luck i redid the spark plug cap for the 4th time and all is well full spark and it runs like a dream again.
Still can't believe it was the 2nd item that i had removed and cleaned.

Re:sherco 200cc 2S Wont start please help me

Post by asimo »

i am new to these late model trials bikes and a little disappointed.
used to have TY 175, TY250, Sherpa 250 and 350 red tanks
those were the days

suspension is great but engine wont go.
I have just bought a Sherco 2004 200cc 2 stroke
I rode it twice and it went great
the third time I rode it, I kicked her over, put in gear and it took off and Sherco, revved out and stoped
now it doesn't go at all
stripped of everything, carby, fuel tank, 2 fuel filters, all jets, 3 new plugs, cleaned all electrical fittings, checked reed valve,
except the stator, waiting for a puller.
where can I get a stator checked and repaired?
any ideas. regards asimo

Before putting on the new cap, and if there is enough length, I cut the plug lead back to expose fresh wire to screw the cap into.
Just a thought.
