Dramas with my Beta

Post by Shawn James »

OK straight up some will say, 'it because its a beta'. what I've got is a 94 Techno [the yellow and black model]
I've been having some dramas with water getting into the oil and water getting into the exhaust.
I've fitted new head seals, I've fitted a new water pump shaft and seals. and while I was at it all the hose' and o-rings got replaced.
hope someone with some more knowledge can help me out, I'm starting get the shits with it.
Shawn.

Did you change the cylinder base gasket?
Is there corrosion damage inside the water pump housing?
What is the history ie when did it start happening, was it doing this when you bought it or did it start doing it after you got it?
Water in exhaust = hole between coolant system and crankcase or cylinder
Water in gearbox oil = hole between coolant system and gearbox (water pump housing hole or water pump shaft seal or getting sucked in from riding through water)
Yellow and black Techno is 1994 model
relax, nothing is under control

Hi David, you seem to be part of the brains trust on this forum.
Base gasket no.
Brand new clutch case and water pump cover and shaft and seals
it was a series of events that prompted the repairs, this bike sat for a few years before a got it, the first time out on it the oil seals started leaking than i noticed the radiator cap wasn't sealing very well and got quite hot one day while out in the bush.
So when i fixed the radiator cap problem i stared getting the oil in water problem, my thoughts are, the problem was always there, but when the extra pressure was put on the system with the new cap, it stated causing the other issues.

The head has a step down into the cylinder so its hard to put a straight edge across it and check for levels.
I think i' going to pull the motor and take the barrel off to get a better look into it, and maybe x-rayed depending on what i see.
Is this a common problem with technos?
Are they a chrome bore?, can i sleeve it if needed?, where can i get over size piston from if needed?
David at Beta has a new/second hand barrel kit, but a dont want to spend that much on it.

OK because you were able to get the radiator cap to seal, it does not sound like a head gasket problem. A leaking head gasket will usually cause coolant to blow out through the cap due to the pressure of the combustion gases being much higher than the coolant system can handle.
I don't remember for sure the way that the coolant gets from the pump to the cylinder on a Techno but I would suspect it goes through a passage in the clutch case into the LH crankcase half, then into the cylinder, so I would suspect a leak somewhere in that section of the coolant flow path.
For what it is worth, Rev 3s have a bit of a name for corrosion inside the water pump housing but I have not heard of problems with the coolant systems on Technos.
