Trial report and results for RTC Inc trial 16 October 2011 at Boston, West of Calliope
A very wet start greeted the section setters on the Saturday morning at Boston, following the overnight storms preceeding the weekend, with the red clay entrance road being very carefully navigated.
Ken Cutmore, Angela and John Sophios, Sarah and Brent Chivers, Timothy and Kevin Evans and David Lahey set six all-grade sections with four amongst the limestone rockery on the Northern slope of the first ridge and two sections in the shaded gully further along. I was so unsure of getting in the next day due to the slippery road that I put my bike in the back of the van, not wanting to bring the trailer in.
As it turned out it didn’t rain again until after the trial the next day so it worked out well for everyone coming in on Sunday. We parked in the semi-shaded area near the gully sections. The conditions for the trial were hot, still and very humid, so it was fortunate we set the riding difficulty a bit easier than normal. Five laps were ridden with all riders finishing.
The traction on the limestone rocks and the slightly damp red soil was amazing and I personally found the sections to be quite a hoot to ride. The multi-line nature of the hillside sections was especially enjoyable. If I had to vote for a favourite section it would have been the Sarah Chivers section where my grade had a tantalising choice between two lines of equal difficulty but very different nature.
Samantha Sophios rode in C grade for the first time at this trial, and was obviously buoyed in confidence and skill from having ridden the abundant rocks in the SA titles, the SA Women’s cup and the Aussie titles held recently in South Australia. Mum Angela usually rides but decided to be Samantha’s minder this time and greatly enjoyed watching Samantha go so well on her Beta EVO 125.
Sarah and Jessica Chivers, having also ridden in South Australia continued to challenge themselves admirably riding in C and B grades respectively.
Mark Casswell rode well early on, especially on the rocks but by lap five, bike problems and the taxing riding conditions were affecting his score.
Drew Wickerson on his amazing-looking TLR250 finished his first trial since his shoulder surgery which is quite a milestone in his recovery and great to see.
Don Jones in A grade was fantastic to watch on his Scorpa SY250. He has become very confident on it and had a ball. His only five all day was when he forgot to turn the fuel tap on.
There was great entertainment after the trial when a few people (including Timothy Evans) went on trail rides on this terrific property. Timothy and Riley Hunt went out along a track that had a few muddy dips and while Riley cruised through the deepest part, for some reason the front mudguard on Timothy’s bike jammed solid with mud. Word quickly spread and within a few minutes there were about 7 or 8 other riders “helping” Timothy clear out the mud. As well as that attention, there was a good cheer when he finally got back to the car park with the bike. As well as all the people “helping” Timothy, John Sophios actually did help him by bringing a screwdriver out to him to clear the mud away with.
