Report and results for RTC Inc trial Sunday 4 March

Trial report and results for RTC Inc trial 4 March 2012 at Watersons, Burua

The Sunday before the trial saw some serious chainsawing, mowing and clearing following yet another well-watered summer season. Large logs that were deposited across the main creek bed way upstream, just below the Watersons dam during the massive rainfall of the 2010/2011 summer were finally cut through and a new section set. This time we taped off the nearby quicksand area for the trial, but not before two people had sunk far enough to go to the tops of their boots while setting the sections.

The section setting and some final clearing out of vegetation took place the day before the trial thanks to a keen group including Brett Chivers, Mick and Nicole Casey, John, Angela and Samantha Sophios, David and Darcy Lahey, Ken Cutmore and Kevin and Timothy Evans.

We ended up with three groups of two sections making a total of six sections spread the whole way from the Western boundary fence to just below the dam.

All but the final section at the top end of the creek (No 6) were ridden by our Juniors Riley Hunt and Darcy Lahey. The spread-out nature of the course made for lots of walking for those people helping their kids, and lots of extra riding practice for the riders along the wonderful gravelly and rocky creek bed on their way between the sections.

It was great to see youngsters Sarah Chivers and Nicole Casey taking on B Grade sections and taking considerable challenges in their stride.

It was also great to see recent C grade additions Samantha Sophios and Timothy Evans riding well in that Grade.

It was Riley Hunt’s first trial on his Beta EVO and it seemed to go very nicely. Brian Crozier also had a new bike to ride – a Honda-Montesa 4RT which seemed to go well for his first ride in B Grade.

Barry Caird looks to have come to grips with his Beta Rev3 and was great to watch, as also was Don Jones on his Scorpa SY250, especially on the log jump on Section 6.

The scores of the winners of each grade seem to indicate that the severity of the sections was about right, but the oppressive weather (extreme humidity and no breeze) had myself and a few others feeling that we were having a harder time than normal.

I'd rather be a D grade participant than an A grade spectator....
