Tyre selection

Post by RMJay84 »

I'm new to trials tyres.

What's good?

What's bad?

What's good value?

Any recommendations for loose rocks & decomposed granite?

I went to buy a tyre today and choked at the $200 pricetag, the only trially in the store, so I thought I better do more research. Also I guess I should mention I need a tube-type :)

Cheers,
Jay

I'm assuming you are asking about rear tyres
The most popular competition trials tyres for tube type rear rims are IRC. They have great performance and are usually reasonably priced.
The only other competition rear made specifically for tube type rear rims is the Michelin tube type, which is not as good as the IRC for grip.
Other trials rear tyres may fit (like the Michelin X11 tubeless) or may not fit depending on what rim you have. The Michelin X11 has great performance.
Dunlop (tubeless) usually wont fit properly on tube type rims
MITAS (tubeless) have a low profile cross-section and won't fit properly on tube type rims
I haven't tried VEE rubber
$200 for a Michelin X11 is not unusual if the tyre was freighted to Cairns on its own from Sydney. IRC are usually a bit cheaper than Michelin X11.
relax, nothing is under control

If you fit a Tubliss (Google it) then its possible to fit any tubeless tyre to a tube type rim, which will mean a far wider choice of tyres.

try this...If you are not in the top A or B grades, ask around from these blokes and you might get a cast off from them. Ive done it and my tyres are good for a couple of years in Clubman Grade.
Feet up, as always!
