I paid around £320 for a brand new kit form 247 Montesa, with some of the parts coming in sacks! Seem to remember I forgot to take the tank with the rest of the parts, so couldnt wait for the next morning to get back to the dealer so I could fit and ride the bike. Due to crap Spanish quality control it sheered the flywheel key, due to loose flywheel nut after only a couple of hours running, but no harm done and all was well after a new key and putting back together properly.

1976. Paid $1,400 for a '76 TL250 - one owner. Condition: rattling cam chain.
2012. Paid $750 for a '76 TL250 - unknown number of owners. Condition: not running for previous 10 years, some parts missing.
2012. Paid a further $1,500 in parts. Condition: still not running, some parts missing.

Summary: not a financial investment but rather an emotional one.
It all started with a KT250 that was so light that it once floated away during an ambitious river crossing.

Not as steep as it sounds as the $1,400 is 1976 Kiwi dollars. That same year I also bought a brand new XL250 for NZD$1,750 (couldn't stretch my budget to the extra for an XL350).

Here's another way of looking at it. I paid $4.66 per pound for my TL way back then. And in 2011, I paid a whopping $59.52 per pound for my Montesa 4RT.
