Yamaha TY250A Speedometer Rebuild

Hi,
Just joined the Forum and I have already found it a great scource for information to assist me in the restoration of my TY250A.
However I now need advice on how to take the speedometer apart and in particular the removal of the top rim that is spun onto the main body.
I have previously tried to remove a similar top from a DT2 speedometer with mixed results (cracked glass) and given the rarity of these speedometers I don`t wish to repeat this.
Any advice appreciated.

I wonder if its worth trying to rebuild it,here in the UK most trials bike have their speedo's removed as they are not used on the road.There must be thousands of them sitting on shelves in garden sheds,with very low recorded mileages on them.I cant remember what I've got in the way of Yam speedo's,I certainly have a couple of Montesa ones hanging around.Would it be worth asking around on here or on Trials Central if there are any up for grabs ?

You would think this would be the case but I have had little success in locating a good speedometer locally and even on ebay they seem to be thin on the ground. I`ll take your advice and see what is available via the UK forums but would be interested in hearing from anybody with one they are no longer using.
I have two TY250A projects under way. An original specification restoration (speedo needed) and' a lightweight' TY250 along the lines detailed below. I`m close to finishing the first and have acquired about 30% of the specialist parts for the second.

As Jon suggested there are lots of TY speedos out there on shelves. I have a few I don't need, but they have all been used. What are the properties you are wanting to see in a TY speedo to make it "good"?

Hi David,

The minimum specification would be the following:-
Works/ good face and clear glass/ no rust to inner face rim/ no excessive rust to the main body but the "normal" rust found under the rubber gasket no problem. No dings to body.
I have both a good mounting bracket and the rear body cover so a mixture of these plus one of the specification above should make a good unit.

I have the following MCS brand sitting on my shelf, new in box, unsure if right type but it came with a box of parts with a TY175 purchase. I also have a TY250R (pinky) one sitting on the shelf if it is any interest?

I can't help with finding a speedo, but just a couple of comments anyway.
I do recall that way back in August of 1973 when I bought my TY250 it had a speedo in MPH not Km/H.
Also unlike the first one pictured I'm sure it didn't go up to 220Km/H. That's pretty impressive for a little TY175!
From memory my old one displayed up to something like 80MPH, but I don't recall ever doing much more than about 45MPH.
As well as that it was mounted down on the fork leg, but I can't recall just what the mounting bracket looked like, except I'm not sure that it looked like the one pictured.
