Newbie with TL 125 issues

Post by wil15424 »

:D G'day all yeah just bought an old TL 125 75 model to have a play with don't want to go all pretty with it just yet but sort out some of its many issues due to neglect.
haven't had a bike in years had mostly moto x bikes but also a few trials along the way such as Sherpa t 250 montesa cota 243 ? I think.
anyhow my first problem after cleaning the carby was when I tightened the carby the slide gets jammed so Im thinking the manifold is warped? any easy fixes or alternative part I can use? also is it best to use the original airfilter/box or is a unifilter with no box OK? sorry lots of ??? is there a good supplier of TL parts in OZ & does anyone know what other bike parts are compatible.
WOW Im into you guy's from the start sorry. Ive got a wheelbarrow full of ??
cheers. all info, suggestions & help greatfully recieved.

the slides on both of my TLs jam if you tighten the carb up too tight. Look across the inlet face and you may see it is bent, don't try and straighten it or else! I just smear a little gasket goo on it and don't tighten too much, just enough to not suck air. Seems to work for me. A replacement Chinese carb is about $35 on ebay, although the one I got had plastic floats and developed a hole which required the hot poker trick. There is a plethora of suppliers for TL125 parts on ebay, from Thailand to the UK, just depends on how much you want to spend. Put in Honda TL, Honda 125 or any combination and wait for the results. The only thing I have found is now unavailable is the flame guard/heat shield for the carb, got one then they disappeared altogether before I could get another. A new one would probably help stop the distortion on the carby, the SL and CT 125 bikes of the same period are virtually the same and may have one, I have been ripping apart an old CT for ages to keep my bikes looking pretty. I use a clamp on 22mm air filter cone, direct to the inlet mouth, and it works great, you save at least 400gm by removing the air box. I got 4 in a pack for $10 from Thailand.

Hey Manxman thanks for the reply mate. yeah ok I get the gasket goo thing will give it a try. I was going to try and flatten it by using wet and dry on a dead flat surface but you have stopped me in my tracks with the OR ELSE !!thanks I assume its a big no no.
on the parts I have seen the plethora available on ebay but was hoping for a more trustworthy & reliable source in OZ.
I believe as you stated there are a number of bikes that share similar parts & was wondering if anyone has a list from Honda or elsewhere that give the comparisons ?
A big thanks Manxman
Cheers

No problem, you could try rubbing down, it could be a long job though, better to make sure the O ring is not flat as this is what actually keeps the air out. Will get all my websites in order and let you know who has what.

Take the rubber sealing ring from its locating grove and use a piece of glass or the bedroom mirror with a sheet of 80 grit 'wet and dry' paper and work in circular motions as well as back and forward in the plane of the bolt holes. It will take a bit of time but the result is a perfectly flat surface, they distort because of being over tightened. Just till it firms the carby home plus a 1/4 turn is enough. Gasket Goo as a back up is fine if used sparingly.
Cheers.

thanks Bedouin I had thought along the same line with the glass & wet & dry, so I will give it a rub, new O ring & gaskets a smidge of gasket goo then firm up with a 1/4 further turn.
big thank's guy's
