Re: Basket Cases

Post by Geoff Lewis »

Hi All, I probably should call this posting 'My short term aquaintance The White Elephant'. I have bought a basket case Fantic 240 and will need many parts to rebuild it. I have a rough frame,an engine, forks, seat and tank. I need an exhaust system, particularly the header, swingarm pivot bolt and most importantly front and rear wheels or at least the hubs. Ideally I think I would probably be best buying a complete bike, even if its pretty rough and make one good one out of the two. Any assistance and advise most welcome. If anyone has any parts or a copy of the workshop manual to sell please contact me. I will post some photos of what I have when I can get one of my boys to help.

Dear Geoff,

Welcome to the brotherhood.

I have a Fantic 240 parts list and manual that I will happily copy and send to you.

I have just moved workshops so I have to find the thing first!

I also have a Fantic 240 complete and running that I will sell to you if you wish, along with several spares and hard to find bits that would go with the bike.

Send me a pm and we can discuss.

Joe.

Hi Everyone,

Takhli44, impressive machine, wonder how you go with timing the cranks to dodge rocks or do you use them to lift the rear wheel onto some grip?

Alan, those photos were taken a couple of rivers to the south in Granite Gorge country, wish they were closer to home!

Geoff, souds like your Fantic is far worsethan mine (it has wheels)! Look forward to the photos.

Joe, really enjoyed meeting and riding with you, was a little disapointed that you were not wearing your famous one piece suit! If you are copying manuals, is there any chance of putting my name on the list?

SHATTER GANG, Donna and I were delighted to get an invite as we had heard some really good stories. We were a little apprehensive about the discussed riding distance and not too sure what to expect, but we knew trials riders on old bikes = fun!

What a great days ride!

What an excellent weekend!

Thankyou Alastair, family and helpers for a great time! Hopefully we can show you some of the North Coast?

When on the bottom they would be great for putting a foot down while still on the crank/peg thus no point. :?

Hi all, Just making a 1st tentative step into trials (although been watching since I was little). I run a motorbike engineering business and I'd like to branch out into trials bikes so figured I might as well build a bike !
I have a 1980 Suzuki TS250 motor that's been cluttering the place for years so I'll use that and build a frame around it. I've managed to aquire a pair of XL250 forks, front wheel from XL125 and petrol tank off an unidentified Honda trials/trail bike.
Next step is pair of back shocks and a back rim. I have a selection of back hubs that I can use.
I'm just investigating what I can / can't do to meet NZ regs so some of this may change but I'd like to base frame around either TL or Majesty.
Hoping to be up and running for middle of winter.

Hi Everyone,

Takhli44, have you had any test rides on the Moped yet, I have a mental picture of you trying to time the pedal strokes to space them between rocks which may be a whole new Trials skill?

Yorkshireracer, sounds like an interesting project. What model XL250 are the forks from and what diameter are they? Do you have the matching tripple clamps or are you going to change the headset angle and play with trail? These are things that may need to be sorted before you start the frame. Post up some photos, someone on here will identify the tank.

Chippy, Seeing as you were the the Winner of our Twinshock Challenge 2012 Series on a variety of machines, we think that it only fitting that you get to choose the Weapons for the Easter Trial. Err I mean Cleverly Designed, Engineered and Crafted Pieces of Trials Memorabilia!

Hi Greg,
Forks were advertised as 1980 XR/XL, 35mm dia. Haven't got triple tree, but there is a set for a '77 XL250 on Trade Me at moment, I might also have the original TS250 ones kicking around somewhere.
I might look at getting a triple tree made up at a later stage with suitable offset etc. It's all new to me is this lark  only done grass track and speedway frames up to now. Still, what can possibly go wrong ?
I'll post some photos up soon as I get software sorted on computer.

Still trying to figure what to use for a carb and then find some rings. The weed eater carb is about right but has no float bowl. Looking at a Briggs. Likely I'm way too old to pedal that thing through a loop, let alone learn a new skill. :D

Hi everyone,

Greg for our twinshock challenge for this year, yes I want to ride hopefully all of my twin shocks. For the Easter 2 day trial, I suggest we ride our Honda's. As you know I only have my TL125 so in saying that whether you ride your Tl125 to keep in the spirit or your TL250.

If anyone else wants to ride an old Honda at this years Easter trial at Undulla (near Jimboomba) then bring it along and we will see how many 4 strokes we can line up!!!!

Greg I haven't had much progress on my other basket case due to work and sub-committee commitments & coaches courses etc, but I am repairing the plastic seat combo due to none available. I need to work on the low oil pressure problem next.

Hi Everyone,

Yorkshireracer, love your question: Still, what can possibly go wrong??????????

In my opinion: LOTS! Simply riding old bikes, the more the better will reveal LOTS of mistakes already made along with some really good ideas.

Takhli44, have you tried to source the right carby, maybe it is commonly used on other motors from the same era?

Chippy, TL125S it is then, a very strategic choice on your part as mine is less than 2/3rds of the capacity of yours and you know how I struggle to get it up hills! MTCQ have talented section setters and love having big climbs at Jimboomba! Will have to practice the pinandpop method. Have linished my spare TL125 forks and I still have the seals you got off Jamie for me, hopefully that will keep the oil in?
