Cut out lanyards for trials bikes

Do that with a foot on the ground Taffy and it will be a 5.

I On another note, it seems to be common practice in Europe to not run 'bar ends' in other words have the handlebars blanked off and then install the throttle over the blanked bar, effectively leaving the end of the throttle exposed to the ground, rather than the bar end, if the bike is dropped.

The Bar end rule was changed here a couple of years ago - not needed now, the bar end just needs to be covered - however I'm not sure I could afford the cost of new grips every weekend so it's bar ends for me...

Hi Kevin long time no see will catch up one day,,,, but i fully agree on the lanyard deal ,,,,,,,,IT IS A SAFTY ISSUE....Having seen one extreamly serious crash involving a young chap that a lanyard would have saved a trip to the hostpital,with suspected spinal injuries that allmost took out 2 spectators as well, was conformation for me to believe thay should be compulsory,and we at s.q.t.a.

suggest that thay are!,,,the risk of injury to any spectator can involve some very nasty repercussions and every safty feature is an advantage to the promoters who put there livelihood on the line,,and for the old farts who think they are too good to need one think again you lot are more likely to need one as we dont have the skills of the top riders now do we ,,,regardless of what level we are riding,,,,remember the old days when we didnt wear helmets would you be so stupid to do that now????regards jb

Hi JB,
I wish they were around in 1982 when I rode my first club day, got the throttle jammed on the TY80 and it went flying off into a fence!.
Luckily for me it was in a quarry, and nobody was around to get collected.
I plan to come up to a SQTA event sometime soon, so it will be good to catch up.

It's a simple, sensible and cheap safety option and I'm happy to go with it. It took me a while before I saw the light regarding sprocket covers (see topic on TC) but I have since had an epiphany.

I had thought that a system similar to that used on the Cota 4RT, an accelerometer that cuts out the motor after x seconds on it's side might do. That would work on a 4T but not a 2T by which time the 2T would be in "diesel mode" and busily crapping itself

I started this topic off with the thought that it was a bit over the top for all trials bikes especially the twinshocks and Classics that I am interested in these days,,,, unfortunately last Friday night I witnessed the exact situation these lanyards have been designed for.
I was at Coventry's Brandon Stadium in the UK for the league match between the Coventry team and Poole Pirates, mainly due to the fact that World champion Chris Holder and Darcey Ward were riding for Poole.
In the last race of the evening Ward was leading with Holder rapidly catching him on the third lap but his front wheel lifted as he went into the first bend at approx 70mph and he went straight on into the air wall. The bike hit it first but Chris had let go of the bike in the split second he knew it was going to happen and effectively cutting the engine via the lanyard.
He hit the wall about 25 meters from me and it was obvious he was going to be badly hurt and subsequent injury reports are available on many websites.
If his engine cut out lanyard hadn't been fitted then goodness knows what other damage might have happened.

Everybody in the stadium hung around waiting for information on Chris's condition.
Days later he's pretty knocked about but I wish him a very speedy recovery and I hope I can eventually get him to sign my race programme

My lanyard kill switch may just have paid for itself last weekend. On a dirt bank climb out of a sandy creek I lost it and the bike and me parted company, of course the motor stopped running. It was good that it did because when I put the cap back on the switch [after cleaning off grit from the magnet] I kicked the bike over and it revved scary high, but luckily I was there to pull the switch and kill the motor again. Just had to re-position the throttle cable and all was sweet.

It's almost 2014 folks & if your riding ANY MA sanctioned Trial from now on the Lanyards need to be fitted to your bike to pass scrutineering.

Better get them done ASAP. I know have five of the things fitted across the "Team Boniface" stable.

That $250 for 5 lanyards to fit to my bikes and before that it was shark fins so what will they come up with next in the name of safety to cost us more money
