cooked exhaust Al dent'e

Post by wil15424 »

Bonjour !! 8) I decided to clean out the exhaust of the TY to rid it of any built up gunk. so I got on the net & read about blowing the oxy up the pipe till it starts burning the gunk inside then turn off the acetylene & just feed in some o2 to keep it burning.works a treat only the bloke doing it as it was his oxy blew a small hole through one side, BUGGER!! no worries he just welded it up without any blow outs, so far so good,I let it burn then flow some more o2 thru it, the pipe was smoking away, heaps of burn stuff came out & it felt a bit lighter.

so I spotted a tiny hole right up on the header pipe thought it may be for a spring but stuff it just spot weld that for me mate, ANOTHER BUGGER!!! MOMENT    :x blew a much bugger hole than was there originally, so unfortunately had to do a repair with some thin iron pop riveted then an ugly exhaust bandage. hey presto all works no leaks & couldn't believe the difference it made to how the bike runs.snappy off idle & heaps more mid range grunt.

So is it Al'dente or burnt offerings. I don't know but it seems to have a crisper, snappier sound & better power. there's no distortion just hope I haven't stuffed it by over doing it.
I will eventually get another exhaust like a WES but this will have to do for now.
If you think your bike is running a bit flat might be worth BBQ ing the exhaust to see if it helps, but make sure it's medium to well done not boot leather
cheers
Au revoir !! 8)

Did you notice a reduction in weight too? I cleaned a TY175 exhaust out a few years ago and reckoned it weighed about half what it did previously

Hi David Yes I could notice a difference even just by feel.
It was one of you're posts David where you stated about a reasonable weight difference that got me thinking, so the other day I took the exhaust off & thought it felt heavier than it looked it should & was right. After sauté' ing the exhaust I felt it was lighter.

Im pretty please with the results so thanks David for sharing your extensive knowledge, If I had done any modification & had the same difference in performance I would have been happy but this is even better as it didn't cost anything except the exhaust bandage $10 #-o

hahaha yeah now it goes a bit better than my son Tyler's bike which felt noticeably better than mine when we first bought them both, so couldn't get him on it quick enough to feel the difference. The smile & head shake from TY as he rode it was confirmation enough =D> that's mad was his comment.

see photo of a dissected muffler - have found the packing at the back is saturated with oil which is a significant cause of the extra weight.

Just wondering, has anyone tried plugging both ends, filling with a mineral-based solvent (turps, thinners, etc) and letting it soak?
I reckon if you left it for a few days, shaking it occasionally, this should shift most of the oil, soot and other gunk.

Of course, you could still use the torch on it afterwards.

soaking it in solvent will clean out the oil from the mineral fibre, but does nothing for the carbon build-up, which is the usual cause of the lost performance

for anyone doing a burnout type cleanout, the mineral fibre packing can melt and turn into little rocks that will rattle around and no longer work as a muffler, unless you cut it open (as trialer60 has) and replace the mineral fibre. That chamber in the photo has had the mineral fibre slightly damaged. I've seen it a lot worse and there was only just little glassy balls left behind
also not all trials exhausts are as elaborate as the Yamaha one in the photo

hey thanks for posting the pic 60trailer I recon I have burnt most of that out of my exhaust.
It maybe slightly louder but that could also be due to the decrease in carbon.
no matter it goes better & will be replaced one day with the WES.
cheers
