Yes I've looked myself David, the manual isn't that great for details :) If you have a secondhand outer top race that would suffice I think and I'd appreciate it very much. If so let me know how much you want for it?

I do not have spare Montesa races. I have spare Bultaco races, but don't know what size they need to be to fit a 348

Also need the ID and the diameter of one of the balls

I was looking through my parts and found a steering stem with the lower outer race still in place so I've salvaged that and will try it tomorrow some time,
or when I get a chance anyway, hopefully that will work, can't see why it won't. Thank you David for your generosity of spirit and patience, it's appreciated pal.
