Looks like it may be hard to adjust the tappets with the engine in the frame.

Its ok to get at the tappets and it will go in the frame ok and working on it sometimes I wish I had gone fishing instead but the problem is definitely in the top half of the engine.
I would have expected some of the oldies amongst us to get this, maybe someone from the Gough family, its quite obvious really.
Get the Goldie books out.

Is that a cast iron rocker box on there ? My next door neighbour is pestering me to rebuild a virtually identical motor in the next few months,don't know if he has any spares...
Should be doing the Sam Cooper again this year,its one of the Sammy Miller series again. Its the West of England club trial this Sunday,the second Miller round.Lovely ride around on Dartmoor,just hope I get rid of the flu in time to ride it.

OK, I'll let you have the bottle of champers through the post Jon, you hit on the cast iron rockers, its also a cast iron head and barrel which means its not a Goldie motor therefore I cannot build it into a 350cc Goldie with that motor......

Which leads me to an interesting story.... The bike was built by my brother many years ago and when he passed away in 1988 I bought it off my sister in law and exported it here. I kept it for many years without using it and eventually sold it.
It was sold again later on but I always knew where it was, but its ZB32 Gold star motor was used in another project and I eventually bought it back about 3 years ago with this ZB31 cast iron motor.
At the time I was backwards and forwards to the UK so I started looking for a genuine Goldie motor and found one after months of searching at Alan Wrights Telford show. The owner lived in Ireland and the engine was too expensive to buy on the spot so it went back to Ireland. We did a deal on the price and his son took it over to the Pre 65 event in Scotland and we picked it up from there.
After that it ended up in a shipment over to Australia and is now firmly bolted into the bike, see pic.
Notice the difference with the push rod tower, on the alloy Goldie motors it was cast into the head and barrel and not a separate push rod tube.
Thanks for the suggestions especially "going fishing" and "not wanting to ride a rigid",,,,, but I'll persevere till I get it going again.

If you look at the current home page of trials Central in the UK they have a photo of the very same Velocette in "Off road revue, issue 40" that was on here a few comments back.

OK, cheers for the bottle - gone already !
I got carried away at a local VMCC autojumble recently and bought this 500 Twin Ariel motor. With all the bits I've been collecting for my HT5 project I realised that it wouldn't take too much more to build a second bike. but not a full on trials bike,more a greenlaner/street scrambler deal. But hopefully will be the perfect weapon for our long distance trial events such as the Lands End MCC...

Here's both sides of a genuine 1960 G3C Matchie from the same stable as the Stornello, tastefully upgraded with period mods, alloy parts etc. His next mod is to fit an upswept exhaust

What a lovely machine, AMC trials bikes always look good,this is a really nice example.
I would leave the exhaust as it is, my rigid has a similar setup, just a smaller silencer. It never gets in the way and you can't burn your leg on it - or heat up the carb. It also places the weight of the exhaust lower down,which with a big single is important because the engines are so tall.
That bike just needs riding, and enjoying - by the rider,and those watching / listening to it. :thumb:

Here's a nice basic 250 Royal Enfield belonging to Ray Barrett at the 2013 Manx Classic 2 day trial.
He also owns a 350cc RE Bullet and has just bought another very nice Bullet,,,,, he's a glutton for punishment !!

I started this thread off with my new Cub project as I found it and now pleased to add the latest pics where its nearly finished.
The same pics appear in "Basket cases".
It started second kick after I was told the motor had been standing for approx 16 years, I was a happy chappie
