monty 315 cota
Hey guys, i have recently bought a 99 monty 315 cota, and am having a ball on her, however on the weekend she developed a bottom end knock that rapidly (over about 2minutes) got got louder. During that 2 minutes though, the horse power seemed uneffected. The sound was more "woody" than "metallic" she now will not start. yet will still turn over with compression. Any ideas
??? before i start looking for a pot of gold to finance a rebuild. Cheers.
p.s. i have been running her on 95octane, 80:1 motul 800 mix.

Possibly loose flywheel for the two minutes and then the locating key for the flywheel sheared when you stoppped the engine so now there is no spark.
Take off the flywheel cover and feel if the flywheel or flywheel nut is loose. That will also give you a better feel for other possible reasons for the noise ie (the big end conrod bearing) as you will be able to turn the engine over carefully.

Well David, you were spot on!! the flywheel was just sitting there with the nut and the 2 pieces of woodruff key in the bottom of the case. Phew what a relief!! The shaft, thread and the windings are all fine (checked under magnifier) so i reckon i will be riding again this weekend, yippie.... Thanks again for the offer for help Rob, i will be in touch to show you what i've learnt since November. I am actually crashing much less now!
Thanks again guys. Wayne.

Hey Wayne, make sure you get metric woodruff keys. Lots of places try to give you the old "near enough" treatment. But with these heavy flywheels it can make a difference. And screw the bugger down real tight too. Make sure the taper on the cranshaft is clean so the flywheel bights tight.
