Hi Everyone,
Greg I have had some success with compressed air with shallow dints like that on the KT. I did a TL125 tank and blocked all the exits & at first I put too much air volume in and the tank splayed out somewhat.
However the process did work after having to re shape the tank back.

Chippy, I too have splayed out a TL 125 tank, the arch inside is fairly straight so not much to stop it opening up. One of my TY 250A tanks had been pressurized by the previous owner and the side effect was to make the tunnel so small it would no longer fit over the frame.
After considering the suggestions and what I had learnt, I made a jig to hold the tank with timber and packers in the tunnel and wrapped ratchet straps around each end to stop it spreading.

Yes Chippy, but the danger is that that technique can blow out good seams.

The actual problem is that with compressed air you can't control WHERE the expansion happens, so it's just as likely to split a seam or push out a good area as fix the dented bit.
Maybe if you heat the dented part to soften the metal there then pumped it up...
I'm a sucker for the sucker.

Jools, that sucker would be good on big flat panels like the side of a van but would not seal on ripples.

So with a little help from some offsiders, a combination of pressure inside the tank and the little sucker pulling, we were able to get most of the dints out. Good enough for this old girl and I like the 43 year old patina!

Now I am considering Rare Earth Magnets for the crease near the top. Maybe one on the inside and one on the outside with a pulling hook?

Greg ... I must commend you ...as one who, as a young lad, watched a TY tank spread under pressure to resemble a stale pizza base.

Here is where I am up to with my GREEN Theme for 2008teen:
The last little bit of the dint in FrankenKT's tank is more difficult to remove than I first thought. This looked like a good thing:

Wow, I thought, a magnet that will pick up 200 kg, that should pull a dint out of a steel tank? But it seems, I was wro wro ____ng:

Magnet hovering over top only lifts 300 grams or in other words it reduces the weight of tank to 1.8 kg, somewhat short of 200 kg lifting capacity! In hindsight, that bloke only looked good for 35 kg, so I think I have been suckered again, just think all that way for very little result. Now I am not one to give up easily so I had a rethink about the tank only being sheet metal and hollow. My solution I thought was to add another magnet inside the tank to increase the attraction.
☆☆☆ Warning, don't do what I did, that is put 2 neodymium magnets close together to feel how much they attracted. The result was little magnet left my right hand and struck the big magnet with enough force to chip the surface in three places with a spark big enough to start a worn out !

OK, now how do I get the magnet out if the tank if I put it in there? Using the old theory about taking a liability and turning it into an asset. I decided to drill a hole through the damaged outer surface for a draw wire to remove it from the tank:

Don't "permanent" magnets lose their magnetism if they are heated up a lot? Maybe as atest try heating up the magnet you tried to drill a hole in. What can go wrong?
I think I "got" the visual message about your holiday. Sounds like a fabulous holiday idea to me

Being very careful and observant fill with water and do an slow freeze for small ones that will pop easily.

I think I "got" the visual message about your holiday. Sounds like a fabulous holiday idea to me

David, do you mean that I should drill a hole in a piece of steel instead of the magnet? As it will increase the magnetic attraction on the inside of the tank. If so, how do I hold it in position?

Obviously it was the first time I have tried to drill a magnet, it worked at first. The principal is fairly simple, the cutting edge does the cutting and the twisted flutes remove the swarf but in this case the swarf would not leave! It bundled up and generated heat, I think you are right about heat causing a loss of magnetism, the curved spark was one of the Clingons leaving the Party!

Greg what I meant was if a magnet loses its magnetism when it is heated, and you can heat the magnet that is inside your KT tank then it will be a lot easier to get out. Heating the magnet through the steel skin of the tank by conduction (by heating the wall of the tank where the magnet is) was how I was thinking it could be done.
To test the theory, heat a similar magnet to what is in the tank and see if it loses its magnetism.

Let me take you back to my very first Trials bike, the humble TY 175. In my opinion, it is the Grey Fergy of Trials bikes, dependable, reliable, easy to work on and prolific. Most people can recognize one and now that I think about it, that was a few years ago and a long time before I started competing.

Meanwhile in our Southern most State that is sometimes forgotten by us Mainlanders, there was a Flexible Young Fellow

So I probably need to explain a little better, I first met the Flexible Young Fellow when, while riding his trusty TY 175 managed to get on the podium at an Australian Titles. As clearly as yesterday, I can remember thinking: There is someone who can teach me a thing or two about how to ride a TY 175!

Anyway, some time later a plan was hatched to compete on similar TY 175s and compare bike skills. The formula was very simple, when compared to splitting the Beer Atom. Almost identical bikes with the same steering modifications, same shocks, same motors, same handlebars, I can go on but basically the only difference was colour schemes. Then came a phone call and he was all excited to tell me he had entered the 2018 Queensland Classic and Twinshock Championships! A ltitle concerned, I tried to mask my major worry and DID NOT let on that I had just bead blasted the engine cases and sat them down next to the bare frame! To say that he was keen would be an understatement!

There was little time left to prepare 2 bikes but as it worked out with some late nights, just enough.

Thankyou WDTC and everyone involved for an excellent Trial, 2 days on sandstone boulders.

As usual, the most prolific make!

It was good to have a Tasmanian riding in our trial Greg. Well ridden to Kurt as well. I hope you enjoyed the terrain at Meringandan and you are enjoying Surfers Paradise. You should of been on a though Kurt!
