Airleaks, Rimsbands, Spokes and Tyres....pissst......

Post by Neo »

Hi all,

Just discovered I’ve air p**sing out of the spoke adjuster nipples after using soapie water all over the rear wheel. About 10 of the nipples are leaking bad.

So I can only assume I have a problem with the rim band?

So here’s the questions.
1. Is the Rim Band on these wheels the same as on the MX bikes, or do I need something special?
2. While I’m in there, would it be advisable to change anything else…vales, blocks etc etc…
3. I can even see air escaping from the thread. where the spoke screws into the nipple. What do I do to stop that?
4. What is the best process for fitting a new band?
5. Am I going to get a “ton of trouble” removing and refitting the tyre? Is this stuff best left the Pro’s at the MX shop? And save myself the cost of the tyre levers too.

Ok with this techo stuff out of the way, here's the crazy bit…...(life would not be the same without a crazy bit from Neo  ).
I have two spare new tyres waiting to be fitted. One front and one rear. I’ve been putting off fitting the rear one, because the tread on the rear is still about 6mm deep (as apposed to 12mm new). And because I very rarely ride on loose/slippery surfaces I thought the reduced grip would force me to improve my skills somewhat.

So what would you recommend ….change the rear tyre while I’m in there, or stick with the fun of the old one?

Are you talking (air coming out past and through the nipples) about the front (tubed) tyre or the rear (tubeless) tyre on your trials bike? If it is the rear, do you know if there is a tube inside your tubeless rear tyre? If so it may have just failed. Sometimes people fit tubes in tubeless wheels if they can't get the wheel air tight any other way.

Yes the rim band in tubeless rear wheels that have the spoke nipples going through the rim is a different rim band to a normal (MX) type rear wheel rim band. The trials wheel is made to be air tight by having a wedge shaped rubber seal while the MX type has a flat rim band to protect the tube from the sometimes spiky ends of the spokes. Some tubeless rear trials wheels are made with a flange for the spoke ends so they don't need holes for the nipples.

Are you joking about fitting that worn down tyre so you can ride better?

Sherco webpage has step by step pictures, of how to replace the rim band and the correct way to install the valve, and spacers.

Well this will teach me not to act before reading my replies!!!

Drove past an MX shop today and ended up with an inner tube (wrong!!) and the (wrong!!) rim band. That the last time I do something in a rush…..

Thanks Howard for pointing me to the Sherco website…don't know why I didn’t think of looking there first.

BJ. You seem to forget that I LOVE working on my bike and compared to some bikes this one is blood reliable. So the air in this Bollon is far, far from deflated baby!!

David, I have chosen to fit the new tyre…but no, I was not joking…

You guys forget that I do not compete. And I have no real intention to compete too. I like to tinker and I like to improve my bike. But that’s because I like to study the “cause and effect” of my work.
I’m oblivious to the obsession that most trials riders have, where by they’re always looking for that extra edge in a comp. I don’t give a stuff. I just want to enjoy myself riding….is that so wrong?. :-k

Well what an experience that was!! ^(=)^
Ended up buying a new rimband, valve stem and a Tyre changing snake. Also had to have a hairline crack welded up on the rim. Wrapped it all up for around $170

Let me see….what did I discover….why did this happen in the first place…errr…some bright spark had fitted an MX wheel rimband. God knows how this wheel held air for over a year!!

But I think the morel of this story is….don’t visit the MX shop with your trials wheels…they haven’t got a flipping clue. [-(

OK PA, it's not "Air on a G string" by JS Bach so how about a bit of help with the joke?
