TLR250 Piston kit & gaskets

Post by Gary B »

Hi Folks,
Just about to try and do a rebuild on my 1985 TLR250. :Honda:
Sadly I've just found out that Honda have stopped making Piston, Rings & Head and base gaskets for 1985 TLR250.
I've heard that other model Honda's have pistons & gaskets that will do the job.
Does anybody know what model / year Honda the required bits could come from.

I don't want to pull the barrell & head off the bike until i've been able to secure the parts I need to rebuild it.

Thanx in advance for any help.

Cheers,
Gary B. :NSW:

Hope I'm not the bearer of bad tidings here Gary, but last I heard a bloke in England had a few pistons specially made and was selling at a very inflated prices. Jacko tried to find something that he could substitute for his TLR250, with no joy, (And he has very good supply contacts).

JP Pistons in South Australia are Australian Manufacturers.
Handle small runs of all types of Automotive Pistons---Including Motorcycles.
Have used them in the past for special car pistons.
Good Product, reasonable prices.
Google them or call 08 8261 7222
Well worth a try.
Good Luck

I think the RTL piston and gaskets fit.
Try this

https://www.tyoffroad.co.uk/

PISTON KIT & GASKETS TO FIT Honda RTL250 STD OR +0.5MM. (REF.H044H&B)
GBP222.50
Wiseco piston kit standard or +0.5mm to fit Honda RTL250 with Head & Base Gasket. This kit includes piston, piston rings, pin and clips, head and base gaskets.

Thanx Brian,
Thats bloody expensive piston kit, close to $500 aud by the time I get it to Australia.
I've been in touch with Serco (Weisco Importers for Australia) and they reckon Weisco doesnt do a TLR250 piston kit.
:? :? :?

I'l keep investigating at the moment & see what I can find.

Thanx again.

Cheers,
Gary.

As I said -Bloody expensive! But it's not as if this is a rare bike eh? ...
There would be hundreds of TLR250s running around, surely it couldn't be too hard to commission a batch of pistons.
And not qty 6, more like qty 60 - too keep the costs down. (Obviously you'd go for the oversizes, not standard).

What do we reckon?

I am sure I heard somewhere that you cant bore the cylinders oversize? or that oversize pistons were not made.

I just received the rings & gasket off TYOFFROAD, took about 8 days, ive had the piston coated with a coating that builds the piston up a bit. A mate who works on Ferrari's said he has used this coating as well, it's probably about a 10 day turn around from God's Country to Vic for the HPC coatings ? Do know Nutty Professor, he lives up there somewhere ?

Hi Gary, you can bore over size , mine has been done. Wisco +.5mm is getting a bit thin but seems to be ok . Not cheap cheers Baxy

No need to source the coating in UK. This outfit in Vic does the clever ceramic coatings:

https://www.racecoatings.com.au/coatings/

It may be worth seeing if a worn piston could be coated to suit a lightly rebored or honed cylinder.
(Jacko had a new thicker liner made and fitted).
