Magnetic mudguard holder

Post by bikerpete »

Not really a product, just something I've made and fitted that seems to work well.

It's common practice to replace the bolts holding the rear mudguard with cable ties or plastic bolts so they break before the guard does when the bike flips.
I got sick of replacing cable ties and still had a little trouble with them either breaking too easily or not easily enough and damaging the guard.

A while ago I made up a small steel bracket bolted to the rear of the subframe/tank, and a pair of magnets in a holder (leftover from a product I used to make) bolted to the mudguard. Now when the guard hits something it flips up but automatically re-connects when it drops back. Works a treat.

This was easy to do on the Sherco, I haven't really looked at how to do it on the GasGas but think it's achievable.

There are rubber coated pot magnets available that would be better for this to avoid corrosion and damage to the magnets. Having the magnets and keeper in a slight Vee configuration would keep the guard perfectly centred, with the flat catch it sometimes ends up a little off centre.

Not a bad idea but the expert riders with balls of steel might have a few issues.

Actually, if you mount the magnets the wrong way around they are a completely repellent idea. :P

What a great idea! I have some pesky plastics on an enduro bike that could do with this treatment
