Fully stripped the rear wheel.
Now do I polish the hub or leave it the original satin

While cleaning the spokes today I discovered I had one short one

Which also means I have a nipple with a bit of thread rusted in it !

So I might bite the bullet and buy all new spokes and nipples for both front and rear wheels.
Any suggestions of who I should contact ?

Well I started cleaning the hubs and somehow they finished up like this.

I have ordered new stainless steel spokes and should have them before Christmas so I will have some interesting work ahead.

Looks like I have some work to do over Christmas reassembling my wheels with new stainless steel spokes.

Had some time today so I assembled my wheels.
Laced up the hub similar to the original photo.

Layed the rim over the top and installed the nipples following the photo.

Laced up the rear wheel.

Yet to true and tighten the spokes.

I have trued up the wheels but how do I know if all the spokes are the right tension

I have enjoyed reading this thread and watching your rebuild. Hopefully the rebuild is still progressing and we will see an update soon. I didn't know Montesa made a blue trials bike, it must be a very rare machine you have there. I wonder how many blue ones were made? Any idea what year yours is?

The chassis is 19M1851, as I believe there were only about 1990 built I guess it’s pretty late, but I think it’s 1975.
I’ve been waiting for my rear shocks to be rebuilt as the shaft of one was bent and wore the piston on one side. I have no doubt that it will be a good job but I have been waiting 2 years and 7 months so far .
I could not get the correct 172 aluminium mud guards as many suppliers think the wheels are the same size as a Cota 123, but they are actually the same as a 247, so I have to adapt a set of 247 guards to it. At least they match the diameter of the wheels
I’m yet to have the front forks tubes rechromed and bushes fitted to the bottom legs as they have worn badly. No bushes are originally fitted so the aluminium legs wear out
I’m waiting to see if I have to sell a kidney to get my shocks back before I send off the forks (any recommendations ?)

I have all the electrics and speedo as I intend to put it on historic plates.

My friend Colin Lough bought his Cota 172 new in 1976 from the Montesa shop at Breakfast Creek in Brisbane. It came with the strange sliding pin type kickstart lever and he still has the bike and it is in excellent condition.
