Old photos and memories

Post by David Lahey »

Rod Fourex and I were discussing our trials riding early days over on Trials Central and had hijacked a thread about a bloke in New York trying to decide whether to buy a Cota 123 or not. This is probably a better spot for our discussions and photos.
I had a bit of a win last night when looking for a particular photo, finding a trove of negatives and colour slides of trials, MX and Enduro photos taken in 1974 -77.
I've just ordered a device to enable scanning of the slides and negatives so I can see them better and post some up for others to enjoy.
Until I get that working, I did find some paper photos that I can post up. Pretty sure I took these photos at a Biddaddaba trial in 1974. I went there with my Dad after hearing about the trial from school friend Mark Stephens who is the kid with the basin haircut riding an RL250. My Dad and Mark's Dad were both motorbike nuts and both worked for Ansett Airline.
Thinking of Brent J and Greg Harding, I included a photo of another rider on an RL250 riding that day. There must have been at least three RL250s that day because Mark's brother Jonathon Stephens also rode an RL250 there. The Stephens kids had Suzukis because their uncle had a Suzuki dealership in Tassie and also because they were regarded as a pretty cool bike.
As for the photo with the Montesa in it, it seems that Rod wasn't the only kid with a Cota 123 at the time, or maybe that one is a 172?

Good stuff David, I'm a bit the same, all the pics my Dad took in the 1970's are on slides and at present I don't know where I've stashed them. I did however buy a Canon 5600F colour image scanner about 11 years ago and at the time attempted to scan many slides for prosperity. Long story short, I had no idea what I was doing and some came out ok, some shite and gave up shortly afterwards. I will attempt to find all Dads slides and resurrect that scanner which I still have, and post some pics up over the next few weeks.
Unfortunately a lot of these pics will be of his boy, but also a few will be of "god knows who", that's just the way Joe rolled.
Here's a few that I did scan many years ago before I gave up.

Sorry that last post is a bit messed up, don't care, can't figure out how to amend. Some more pics of Biddaddaba March/April 1974.

Excellent Rod. Pretty sure Mr yellow shirt riding the wet stones is Jeff Gough.
I can't wait to get the scanner and see things I haven't seen for 45 years

What a compliment, but wet rocks yellow shirt is me, 979. We were all trying to emulate Jeff's riding style because he was the man.

You sure tricked me Rod. Very distinctive style. That's why I thought I had it nailed!

Used to ride our Alpinas on that, and the next door Gold Coast (Nerang) property.
Remember coming across that event by accident.

You've got a better memory than me Rod. The only numbers I remember are mine N87 and George McKenzie's 28

I still remember that Scottish style creek section to this day, it went forever and was awesome. Note lack of tapes yet no one was deviating out of the creek bed, it was all about the line of sight between pegs being the boundaries, imagine trying to set a section like that today without tape. It was a wonderful property and I cannot remember for sure where it was other than being the '75 or '76 Qld Titles hosted by I thought Gold Coast MCC. Maybe Christmas Creek ? as you may have mentioned earlier David. I'm sure I have more slides from this event once I locate and scan them.
