Might it be the number of springs in the clutch?

Yes Terry you got it.
6 KT springs was more pressure plate force than necessary.
5 KT springs would cause the pressure plate to mis-align.
4 KT springs was not enough force.
4 TY175 springs is perfect.

I was thinking the number plate but I know how you like to throw red herrings in.
OW for factory works bike
434 model designation for TY250

It can’t be an accident it has ended up with that plate on it.
Does it have a compliance plate?

I agree with Rod. The number plate is interesting though. I could of also made another comment but I think swearing is frowned upon in this very short post!

I see Greg's latest barn find bike has a front road rego number plate holder like the ones we used to also have in Queensland in the 1970s.
Back then I had a road rego TY175B and it came to me with only one number plate (on the back). I didn't worry too much about how roadworthy my bike was (like many 17 year olds at the time) until I got fined by the Police for the missing front number plate.
Later on the requirement for having a front number plate on Queensland motorbikes was removed on safety grounds. I think I still had one attached somewhere on the front of my IT175D in 1977 and above the headlight on my SP370 in 1979 so it must have been after then.
Greg, you will probably be pleased to know that looking at that bike set off my "uncanny valley" brain wobble because the front guard is on backwards. It has been successfully ridden like that for a long time so it's obviously not a functional problem.
Does anyone else suffer from the uncanny valley effect as it relates to motorbikes?

Just wondering about your latest acquisition Greg, are those “ape style” handlebars genuine? There really is some serious rust on those forks. I’m with Kurt on this one, the registration in some way is smacking us in the face, but Greg has a way of making things cryptic. Everything else seems genuine.

Yes Kurt, it was obviously the number plate! My first thoughts were: As soon as David sees this, he will post a comment straight away. Nice to get something right I suppose.
434 is the model designation for the "A" model only and they came out pre compliance so there is not one attached. OW stands for Original Works I think and it covered several different models?

YES David, I suffer from it and lots of other things too!
Is it Possible that "A" models came in a box with front mudguard not attached?
Is it Possible that "number plate" was simply next one in the pile?
Is it Possible that the owner and Registry Office were oblivious?
Is it Possible that OW works bikes were unheard of in Australia at that time?

Chippy, the handle bars are solid aluminum, what made you think of "Ape Style"?????????????

Can someone build a time machine and go back and check?
We can compIle a list of things for you to do to make it all worth while.........
