What is this coating

Wondering if anyone knows what the original coating on this kick starter is?

We used to call this "Hammerite". It was supposed to be a hard finish.
Oh and I don't think it would be the "original" finish, (but I stand to be corrected)

I was thinking this was some sort of electroplating, I did some research and found that there is black zinc, though I am not sure if cast steel is suited to zinc plating?

The bike doesn't show any signs of restoration work or modifications, I am leaning towards the coating being factory??

I always thought it was black oxide.

I have one of his nickel plating kits. Awesome stuff for bring back to life stock zinc plated parts that have lost their original protection.
On gooftube there's a whole bunch of steel blackening recipes and techniques that will answer a lot of questions
