Re: which way up for multi rate fork springs

Hi Everyone,

David, isn't half of the length of springs considered unsprung weight? Therefore wouldn't you fit the heavier end of springs at the top? While I am asking questions: Were we talking about unsprung weight with regards to gold valves and damper rods instead of springs?

So many questions.....

I was hoping you had forgotten about the unsprung weight effect of the gold valves because when I went to weigh the damper rods I realised that the damper rod I modded to fit the gold valves to is a different design to the standard TY250 damper rod. I think the one that I modded is a :kawasaki KT250 damper rod and it has a steel head and a steel piston and even with all the extra holes carved in it and the top machined off, is heavier than a standard :yamaha TY250 damper rod with its aluminum head and aluminium piston.
I think I'll just weigh the Gold Valves and forget about the compensatory effects of the damper rod mods weight loss.

I finally did something about a distraction

Post by David Lahey »

Yet another little thing to make riding a bike better.
Over the past two weeks I've been setting up the forks on a few twinshocks.
This afternoon thanks to the public holiday I've made a prototype guard to stop my boots getting hooked under the fibreglass seat base on this TY250.
It was fine with my Alpine Stars boots and a standard :yamaha exhaust mid-section. Then I went and got new Forma boots and the WES exhaust and ever since then, whenever I wore the Forma boots on this bike the top edge of the RH boot would repeatedly catch under the edge of the fibreglass seat base which was quite a distraction when trying to ride sections.
I first made a cardboard version to get the dimensions then made this one from 3mm HDPE. It's a lovely bike to ride apart from the boot catching thing so I'm looking forward to trying it out soon.

The '' nicer '' is a bike to ride the more you want to ride it. Good job David.

Maybe without the :honda: motor, the rest may well weigh the same as a normal trials bike. I hope you do a weight comparison Greg.
It does look very "strong" though
