Great article, Winston Stoke's son Matty has dabbled in trials a bit owning a couple of late model Gas Gas bikes. The article has been shot a Glenrock Lagoon south of Newcastle, the area becoming a large Mountain Bike venue in recent years. Motorbikes were never allowed in there legally but back in the day everybody used to sneak in there anyway. Interestingly Sammy Miller rode in the same area and further south a couple of kilometres at Dudley Beach when he came out here in the early seventies.

Good article. My first ever Bultaco was a model 213 which was the 350 version of this bike. I bought it in 1979 so a year after they came out. Used to ride it to work every weekday then take all the lights off it, change tyres and gearing and ride in the creeks all weekend then change everything back again to ride to work on Monday morning. A mate had one 25 odd years ago.
We had read somewhere that Turning the Piston 180 Gave it better low down performance suited for Trials use.
We did turn it and Changed the Gearing. Big change to the Alpina.

Wow! Reading that did make my gumboots go all warm and fuzzy Greg! Mine had Boge Muholland shocks on it with 8 inch rise Renthal handlebars.

Hate reading these articles - thinking about the bikes you should have never sold.
Remember getting the M212 and couldn't believe how stiff the suspension and seat was and the tight motor compared to all the old Alpinas I had before it. Loved that bike.

A lot of the M213 and M212 from new had intermittent starting issues, which has come to light recently that some of the magnets in the flywheel weren't magnets at all.

These later models are far and few between now.

I like that bike test of the model 213. There was lots of info about what they liked and didn't like about riding it.
I was a bit surprised that they didn't like the shocks. I've run them on three different trials bikes and my 138 Alpina and I reckon they have a very nice action for tight off-road riding and trials. Maybe the ones on the 213 they tested had different springs than what I've got on mine. They do lack a bit of travel compared with modern shocks. I think they are about 3.5" travel.
A fabulous bike to ride for serious trail riding.

How are your gumboots Graham?

A friend from my work in 1978 bought one of these new (a 212 Alpina) and used it as his daily ride to work between Cleveland and Mt Gravatt TAFE.
It used to cruise along very nicely along Creek Road at 80 km/h. I can still hear it in my memory from riding along with him.
Since that time, the model 212 Alpina has been on my admiration list.
