1977 TY175 exhaust

Post by Ian Read »

Hi, i was riding my beaut TY175 last weekend for 3 days. over this time 2 things happened. I bought it from a guy in Adelaide in November last year - it's a great simple, well balanced ride. We also have a '79 model.

1. the exhaust pipe seam split just outside of the head outlet (about 5 cm long). Can i weld exhaust pipe that is 30 years old or do look for a new or second hand replacement pipe. Also a previous expoxy pacth has blown off revealing the pipe is very corroded right on the first bend out of the manifold.

2. the bike stops running after about 20 minutes, and when she cools down can be started on second kick and away we go again. Can anyone throw any light on diagnosing this problem.

I am also looking for a workshop manual for this machine, can anyone throw any light on where i can get one readily in Australia?

Cheers,
Ian

Don't bother looking for second hand - they are all 30 years old. Yours sounds pretty normal for an original pipe. You can buy a complete new chrome plated front pipe section made in the UK for $$$$ or you can make a front pipe yourself from pre-curved sections bought from your local car exhaust shop. I did the latter and it cost about $25 for the pipe pieces.

Sounds like a blocked fuel tank vent

Usually available on eBay (CDs, photocopies and originals). May not be from Australia - does it matter where it comes from? The Factory TY175 parts book is very useful. You may find your local Yamaha dealer will lend you a parts book to copy (that's how I got one).

welding the exhaust shouldnt be a problem..... but keep in mind that its a 2 stroke, and will have oil inside the pipe.

So sandblast it, or have it cleaned properly before welding.

Trying to weld on dirty, oily metal is dificult, and the wrong way to go about it.
TY80 a model side cover and air box tube wanted.

I agree with Davids advise about exhaust shop bends, get 40mm Mandrel bends made, as rolled bends tend to flatten and crease. May have to get a performance exhaust shop to do this. You should be able to recreate the front section easy enough and get it mig welded if you can.

Manual, find here, thanks to Trialsport:

I would rather push my twinshock than ride a modern!
