New Michelin tube type rear tyre

Post by David Lahey »

Last weekend at the Denman 2-day, I saw one of the new type Michelin tyres made for tubed rear wheels.

It is differentiated from the old tube-type Michelin by not having "X11" after the words "Trial Competition". The owner told me that it was not a radial tyre. I suspect it is the replacement tyre for the old tube-type rear which is no longer being produced. I forgot to ask after the trial how it went.

Does anyone have any comments about how good this new tyre is?

Can anyone recommend tyres for an '81 Montesa 349 and '83 Montesa 350? both bikes have old probably original tyres. Are there any restrictions for twin shock competition in NSW?

Your Cotas both had tube type rear rims as standard equipment. Modern trials bikes have tubeless type rear rims which are slightly differently shaped where the tyre bead sits.
If you are going to use your Cotas for competition, the Michelin X11 tube type rear is very good and probably the most expensive and hard to source.
IRC also make a tube type rear and I have seen that they fit nicely on Cota 348 rear rims which are probably the same as your rims. They are also reportedly good to ride with and are lots cheaper than Michelin. I have bought my first recently but have not used it yet.
The other rear tyres available in OZ are intended for tubeless rear rims and you may have problems keeping the beads on the rim the whole way around at competition pressure. Tyres in this group include Michelin X11 tubeless, Dunlop D803 and MITAS.
Tyres for competion use in OZ are required to be trials pattern and no wider than 4.00 size.
It is quite legal to fit modern, tubeless rear rims to your Montesas and ride them in Twinshock Class competition in OZ. Tubeless tyres provide a slight traction and weight saving advantage compared with tube type but the expense of converting the wheel is high and usually not considered worthwhile.
Front tyres are easy to source because modern bikes have tube type front rims. Most popular fronts are Michelin and Dunlop. They are both very good.
