The VIN is that pesky number that needs to be ground off and welded over (so it can't be xrayed) and restamped if you have a stolen bike or car. It is only another thing designed by bureaucrats to make life harder....has nothing to do with rego laws!

Back to your original concept.
Most of the trials bikes that came after the registerable mid 1980s TY250 are very uncomfortable to ride sitting down and it is almost impossible to use the rear brake.
A local rider here went to the trouble of getting an ADR plated TY250 registered so he could ride to work and ride in trials and it cost him quite a bit (about the same as the purchase cost of the bike). He didn't ride it much though because he worked out how expensive it would be on tyres if he rode with competition tyres on the road - they chew out very fast.
Way back when lots of people had registered trials bikes (the 1970s) the bikes were actually passably comfortable to ride sitting down and the tyres were much longer lasting (and nowhere near as grippy). Those old bikes are still good for that sort of thing today and if you use Pirelli trials tyres, they will have quite a long life on the road compared with Michelins.
The pre-76 trials bikes are all OK to ride on the road but some are more comfortable than others. My favourites for road work are the KT250 and the TY175. For 4 stroke fans the TL125 and TL250 are a good choice. Sherpas and OSSA MARs have comfortable seating positions if you like Spanish bikes.

Just wondering what ended up happening with this post because I'm trying to find out where I could locate a bike that would be able to be used in trials and then occasionally on the road too?? Rich86, how did you go locating a bike and what have you ended up doing? any help would be great

I have an interest in this issue also, being old enough to remember Honda, Yamaha and Bultaco trials bikes being registered for the road ,but rarely used for other than recreation. I am considering making the change from my trail bike to a trials machine but the idea of having my riding confined to a few private areas is offputting. Where do trials riders in the Sydney or central Coast areas practice and develop thier skills when not in an event?

Scorpa Australia will be attempting Australian compliance on the TYS and SYF range of Scorpa models in 2007 for 2007/8 release.

so if I put 1974 stickers on my sherco can I get it registered without an ADR plate??
Yeah I know....Dumb question but worth a try
