Hi, a mate of mine has an 06 Sherco with the same crack, it was not noticed for a while because it also cracked across the left hand side of the frame where the upright meets the top section. I guess this is where the load transfers to when the cross piece lets go. This sounds like a common fault for Sherco frames...
I also had a crack across the left hand side of the frame where the upright meets the top section on both my 99 and 00 sherco's I had them both tigged and they never split again.

I won't bother Nic. Go to someone who is good with a TIG. As welding straight along the crack would be the best and simplest way to go. Do not compress the sides of the frame to close the gap.
I had mine done with the forks still in place. I just removed the rad and CDI. And kept the wires well out of the way. The burnt area was only 2cm wide and was easy to spray paint.
Best of balance.

Just replying to your request on the Trials Central website. Some of the earlier 06 frames did have a problem and were changed under warranty in the Uk. The later frames have additional strengthening behind the cross member that has cracked.
Looks I might have mislead you...sorry about that. As my one has cracked again.
Did your engineering friend come up with a design for a strengthening plate?
