OK, this is what I did and it worked well.
Firstly I removed the pads and using a flat surface (pane of glass) I scuffed them up a little with course wet and dry laid flat on the glass. Not much, it seemed easy to sand the pad material. I then cleaned the disc (I conferred with Scorpa OZ as to the nature of the friction coating) using a bit a meths. After putting it all together, lo and behold brakes are great again. Easy.
