H Keychange,
I have just read your post, and your comment on what the Bucca Trials people said. Just taking the response that you recieved at face value. What they have told you is not altogether true, however it is consistent with them not being very factual. We have trials orienated rides at a few different venues at least three times a month all year round. The exception is when I am away competing.
You can find out more about me on Basket Cases in Classic and Twinshock and/or call me on 0428789854. I am curious where you are located as I know most of the trials riders within a three hour radius. Look forward to meeting you, comparing notes and linking up for a ride!

Re: Montesa 247 performance
Hi Greg -
I am a rank beginner in the art of trials. But once I have my Cota mechanically sound I hope I can give it some work for what it was designed. We have lots of trails around here, but trail riding isn't a good idea alone so I would love to meet up and have a serious crack at rock hopping.
Mobile coverage is sporadic up here in the hills so land line is better
Cheers
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
I much prefer christian names, as it turns out you are less than an hour away! We are having a ride this sunday at my place, sausage sizzle lunch and ride afterwards. Will call you with more details tomorrow night on landline.

Hi Greg,
I'm an ex Nana Glen boy now in Brisbane. I used to love riding in Wedding Bells and around the old timber mill out past the showground. I read with interest at what you are doing in regards to letting other people ride the basket cases - good on you! - I wish sometimes I still lived in the area as I miss taking the old TY175 out for a spin. You live in a great part of Australia, surrounded by seven state forests.

Re: Montesa 247 performance
I found a spare needle in my box of parts and used that - with no effect at all. The main jet is a 160 and I have an old spare 150 but I think that is larger (maybe badly worn) - I have just read an article on the Amal web site (has some good documentation) - I have been working on the assumption that raising the needle clip (to top slot) leans off the mixture and when I did that I got a major improvement - however the article I mention on tuning Mark 1 states "If at full throttle by slightly closing the throttle the engine seems to have more power, the main jet is too small". Well that's is what happens when riding up a hill I have to back off the throttle to get power as there is a dead spot at full throttle. I am confused. ANyway I just cleaned and installed the 150 main jet and it appears better - I wonder if I should raise the needle again.. might try it.
Looking forward to Sunday Greg, I hope I can get this figured out before then.
Cheers

Re: Montesa 247 performance
Its the needle jet that wears the most, not the needle and the main jet does not wear at all, but people do drill them out!
Another thing is that it can be short on power at full throttle by being too rich or too lean on the main jet.

Re: Montesa 247 performance
I might just buy a full carbie kit with jets and be done with it. In fact I just did that and included the upgraded float bowl - hopefully then instead of tweaking this and that everything will be back to original stock condition - if the manual is correct
I'll let you know how I go

Re: Montesa 247 performance
An update - two important parcels arrived today. My compression testing kit and it came out at 135 psi which I think is reasonable.
The second was the compression release. Talking it over with Greg Harding he mentioned that in his experience lots of Monties had starter gear problems and it's a possibility that mine isn't the correct setup. Anyway I installed the compression release and yippee - just push it past that locked spot and away she goes easy peasy. I reckon my wife 150cm 45 kgs could start it now... what a relief.
Sunday's too far...

Went for a 20k ride and on the way home the rear and didn't feel right... took it very easy to get home and sure enough the wheel bearings are shot
- too late to find any in Dorrigo... so now I miss out on going or a ride with Greg

Re: Montesa 247 performance
I dropped both front and rear wheels into local mechanic asking that bearing be replaced. They rang back an hour later to inform me that there is a crack in the rear hub - inside brake area - I haven't seen it yet but it sounds problematic. I used to know a guy who could weld and machine anything - unfortunately I don't him any more. I will be taking it to a local guy, but I would appreciate tips on what to look out for and whether there are any horrors I should know about before I throw more money at my rapidly increasing cost of ownership
Alternatively I might be able to pick up a good second hand replacement - does anyone know if the Cota 247 hub is compatible with other monties or bultaco's etc
Thanks Andrew
Thanks Andrew
