Directing exhaust gases into something that is a bit higher than the bike exhaust?

Hang on - guesswho was spot on the money - it's a modern flatslide carby! I wondered what they looked like!

Had a mate with one of those PVC guns that launched; oranges, tennis balls, spuds etc .Crazy bit of gear, it could launch an orange an entire city block, but ... no not a launching device.
