Dad bought a new TY175 in about 1978/79 - I'm pretty sure it was $1050.00 from the dealer including on-road costs (he used to ride it to work during the week, trials on the weekend).

Today in as-new, showroom condition I think it would be worth $5000-$6000. Unfortunately we sold it a few years back for much less than that and now we are trying to track it down to buy it back!!

But from all the bikes the CZ mx 75 models were selling for about $600 back then and Suzuki RN and RH 74 models were going for $900 with full spares kit, when the RM models were released.

You should have bought one or more of those RN - RH Suzuki's for $900 and stuck them in the corner because they are worth a mint now. You could probably get $15 to $20k for an imaculate one now.

I Actually stood there at Hazel and Mores show room in Sydney in 75 deciding what to get ,they were all there right in front of me, but unfortunately I wheeled out an RM 125 for $699.

Yes George is right (and he should know). The only bikes I kept from my teenage years were the TY175B, and an RM250C that I fitted an SP370 motor into in 1979. Out went the TS185, the 325 Alpina, my IT175D and Yamaha DT2. The only one I now regret selling from teenage years was the 325 Alpina. The group of bikes currently in my shed have mostly been built up from basket cases in the period from 2000 onwards. The only one that has been there slightly longer is the TY250A I bought in 1994.
Bikes I was happy to get rid of after owning for a while during the 1980s, 90s and 2000s were Suzuki TM125L, Yamaha IT250K, 1994 Honda XR600L, 1981 Yamaha DT175G, 1996 Yamaha WR200R and Yamaha TY250Z
Manxman, I tried selling some twinshock trials bikes during the 2000s, but I soon worked out that the price people are willing to pay is only ever a fraction of what they have cost me in parts alone. It's better to hang onto them so they can be lent out to friends to ride.
The TY175B I bought second hand in 1976 will be getting a ride this weekend at the TY Challenge in Veterans 50-59. I test rode it this afternoon and it is going great.
relax, nothing is under control

Indeed, an object is only worth what someone else is willing to pay. There is a 76 TY on ebay for 1800 buy it now, (but it may go for less), in that case it has only just increased in value (never mind the 4k he reckons has been spent on it) in 36 years. It would appear the real money is in old British four strokes of the Sammy Miller Ariel variety. By the way, the Cota has disappeared from ebay.
Question- is the TY worth it? I am a bit sick of Hondas

Bought my Bulto SherpaT 250 for $400, then moved on to a TY250a from Chappy for $500 in the mid 80's. I still have the TY and I should have held onto the Bulto!
Feet up, as always!
