Fantic's are still relatively easy to find, and the last of the air-cooled mono's work really well in standard form. Modifying a TY is certainly an option if you have access to engineering facilities and the required know how. However if you need to pay someone to do the work, then an example of the likely costs involved is £700 for a Nigel Birkett modified cylinder..............which is around about the price of a tatty 245/305 Fantic complete and running.

Shown you all how to do a MONO barrel just like Birkett does, see page 1 of this little saga ! Welding about £25 I seem to remember then add a piston and bore hone on-top. I have a Birks barrel myself and the porting was NEVER touched but I dont think Birks would charge £700 !!! Are you sure .........??? :o

That JCM is a good looking bike but remember the engine is early air-cooled GASGAS motor with a tiny clutch and porous castings etc, not always a good quality surface to chrome plate the bore if its porous....! GASGAS quality control was non-existent in those days but the French did a better job of building a bike than the Spanish.

Nigel charged someone in the NE of England £700 for a modified and refurbished TY cylinder, which seems pretty costly when you can buy a tatty 245 or 305 Fantic for around the same money, either of which work very well in standard form.

Modifying a TY to work well is a bit like building a "P65", in the sense it can be done for reasonable money if the TY owner can do most if not all the work themselves, but gets very expensive quite quickly if there is a need to pay someone to modify the motor, alter the frame, and rebuild the suspension, etc etc.

If you are riding very easy club trials, then the stock TY is perfectly ok in standard form, but I think the OP is intending to take part in the UK "Normandale" series which seems to be aimed more at classes catering for older riders on modern bikes, so its understandable that he is looking for a bit more than the stock TY can offer.

I have 3 TY's currently and the #3 bike is totally stock right down to a rubbish MT43 on the back and a choked up exhaust ...... every time I ride it just reminds me how bad a TY CAN be and yet it gets a fair amount of use for midweek practice. For anything serious I use the Mick Andrews bike or the 4RT 280 but the old shed is a good bike to practice on with all its faults, makes you appreciate a fully sorted bike !!! Clean a section on the old 'un and you can do it in fine style on the best bike. As for older rider yep ..... Im pushing 56 !!

The stock #3 bike is bloomin' awful ..... takes ages to pick-up, slow and ponderous, wont rev etc etc But Micks #1 bike far superior, loads of bottom end and smooth ! I cannot replicate it (power delivery) with my #2 bike (my take on a Mick copy ) its not quite right but for some reason it #2 turns much better on full lock. Now I know the back end frame has been lifted because the fender clearance is another 5 inch on stock & Micks and the #2 has a brand new OEM clutch so a full lock turn on loose rocks or wet roots is so easy, feed in the clutch nice a nd easy and a tight turn on steering lock-stops is no problem !!
Anyway Micks engine actually belongs to #2 frame (numbers match) so when I have 1/2 a day I shall put it back to original. Then I have Micks engine in the modified frame with the Fox Air Shock, not sure if this Fox Shox makes it turn better .... but something does.
Wide lowered footrests mean you can balance for ages on it, have a video of 1992 Red Rose national and Rob Crawford, Steve Colley and Woody et al must have been in sections 4 mins poncing about. Intend to post on YT when I can compress it or break the original file up ( its 1.7GB) and then you can see just how long they were in sections in 1990's.
